Hi guys,

I have had a problem with my MBP 16" for a few days now and I can't find the problem. So it started, when I updated to Ventura. My MBP wouldn't recognise my TB-display while it was in clamshell mode. I had to manually open the MacBook, connect the display and close it again. This was incredibly annoying, but oh boy, did I not see, what would come later. After doing this for a while, I thought of maybe upgrading to Sonoma to see, if this problem might be mitigated. This made everything so much worse.

Now, I get constant kernel panics multiple times a day. The MBP just freezes and restarts. (I will attach the report in the post)

At first it looked, like it was a problem when the MBP is connected to anything TB. However, after leaving the Mac on to do a backup and only connecting it to power, it still crashed a few times. Took me 5 tries to do a backup to my server.

I tried going back to Ventura, but this is not possible without losing all my data. My last backup is a bit old, so if possible, I wanted to find a solution without restoring the backup. (And no, I did not backup before upgrading 😢). Now I read that a lot of outdated software might cause this and also some anti-virus, firewall, anti-malware tools. I do not use anything like that (aside from AppCleaner, but it's not even running in the background) and have removed all I could and don't need. Does anybody see something in the log, that might be of help? I looked through it, but I am not the wiser.

Did you do a backup while truly only connected to power or did you connect an ethernet cable to it somehow as well?

So if I'm reading this correctly, the problem existed before Sonoma was installed but now seems worse. Is that correct?
It looks like you may have a USB-Ethernet adapter connected. Is that correct, and if so, does the problem occur when the adapter is disconnected?
Have you run Apple's diagnostics on the computer?

Good question. So I made it a point to only connect the necessary adapters (Ethernet). When this also caused a kernel panic, I just connected to power and did everything over Wifi. Was still getting kernel panics.

Yes, kind of. So the problem before was, that the display was not connecting. I have an LG ultra wide, that has basically everything attached to it (Ethernet, USB Soundcard and so on). It connects with a TB cable to my MBP and acts as a hub. After upgrading to Ventura, it would not connect to the display until I opened the Mac or attached a separate power cable (USB-C) and then connected the display. Then it would usually connect. However, I never had any kernel panics, just the annoyance with the screen in the morning. After that, the system ran fine.

Edit: I did the diagnostic check and it came up without any problems.

The panic points to the driver for the Ethernet adapter. I'd try a different adapter. If you still get a panic with nothing but power and wifi attached, it'd be useful to see what that panic log looks like.
I'd also uninstall the Intel Power Gadget even though that doesn't seem to be related; the version you have installed is out of date and it's no longer supported or available from Intel.

Yeah, I did get the panics even without anything connected.

On a different forum, somebody pointed out, that the problem might be the Intel Power Gadget. I have tried to remove it, but there was only one .sh file in the login items. There seems to be an uninstaller for the app. However, I do not have the app installed anymore and you can't download it, since it doesn't seem to be supported by intel anyway...

The log is attached to the first post. Or are there different log files for kernel panics?

The Power Gadget uninstall script deletes these files/folders:
/Applications/Intel Power Gadget
/Library/Extensions/EnergyDriver.kext
/Library/Frameworks/IntelPowerGadget.framework
~/Library/Preferences/com.intel.PowerGadget.plist

You can manually delete all of these, if they're still installed, and then restart.
As for the panic log, I was asking about one when nothing except power is connected to the computer. The one you posted here shows that other devices were connected. As such, the panic log should look different.

Thanks, did just that! I will restart and let the Mac run for a while. Hopefully that has fixed it.

Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, that is true. I have saved them all in a file. Might be, that this one was still from the time the adapter was attached. Do you have any idea, where the logs might be stored? I tried /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, but the ips files here seem to be a little bit different from what is shown after the crash on boot (the report popup).

Ok, so this did in fact solve the issue of kernel panics while the Mac is running, as far as I can see. However, it introduced a different kind of kernel panic. This one occurs, when the Mac wakes up from sleep. I connected the external display today and it picked it up fairly quickly. However, it booted to show me the kernel panic popup again and I had to reopen all apps. Interestingly, I got 2 reports, so one might be from before I deleted the Extension. I will attach both. Do you see anthing?

First off, Sonoma has reduced driver compatibility with my 2019 i9 15 MacBook Pro Vega 20, particularly the AMD graphics driver. It reduced my battery capacity by 300% compared to Ventura and reduced my perceptual performance by 50% for end user tasks. “Pro” tasks were largely unaffected. I downgraded to Ventura and lost a month of data, which most was in other places (synced to my Synology). So there’s the obvious; Sonoma has poor performance on non Apple Silicon, my 2 cents.

But,

Try the following before downgrading…

Use the opposing thunderbolt; your MacBook has different thunderbolt modules, 2, left and right.

Try disabling graphics switching; PCIE sleep support problems are a thing in the PC world; maybe Mac world too now.

Lastly, try a different cable; thunderbolt to HDMI, thunderbolt to DisplayPort. They are different protocols which invoke different calls on the same driver.

Again, downgrading is a fantastic idea, backup the “delta” data first, restore and re-sync the delta difference.

So I tried a different cable and different TB port and it seems to work for now. However, it will probably crash in the morning after a long time of not using the Mac.
Restoring is probably the only option. It is baffling to me, that the system becomes so unstable once you update. I know, Intel is not really supported anymore, but this is beyond annoying.

It’s probably the AMD driver itself; I looked over the kernel code for Sonoma today and aside from security and feature support updates, nothing stood out, which means the drivers either on Intel or AMD don’t play so well with Darwin 23. That means downgrading is your best option, IMO.

Sorry to break yours and @thetechhimself 's conclusion but it's very likely something more playing into this or you would see way more complainer threads post Sonoma. Anecdotally I run an Intel 16" through a thunderbolt dock and often use software that asks for the AMD GPU. It's all fine. Nothing I repeat nothing works worse since upgrading from Ventura.

You mention you had trouble with your setup even before. It could be thus be a hardware issue before that got exacerbated with the update. If I were you I'd just get it over with, move my stuff to temporary storage and try running a clean install.

There’s nothing a clean install would resolve here other than display prefs default reset. The energy settings is another.

Tell you what; run knock knock by objective see, see if any kernels extensions are present. Maybe. It’s free and good for malware detection and removal. Perhaps there is incompatible third party present… Doubtful, but have a peek.

Apple 1000% sabotaging Intel Machines, you can collect your $12 bucks after the class action lawsuit settles in 2028.

It’s probably the monitor combination. Trust me, first thought. But, that costs money for something that worked fine on Ventura that Sonoma broke. I believe it as a former ACMT and systems engineer these days.

There’s nothing a clean install would resolve here other than display prefs default reset. The energy settings is another. Again, clean install is overkill, but sure. It’s highly improbable to resolve, as a former ACMT…

But OP has stated they get kernel panics while only connected to a charger. It seems that the app Figma is present in the most recent log. Not pointing to the app in particular but it's a design app that to my knowledge uses plenty of GPU resources, so I'm with you here that it seems related to GPU.

Thunderbolt feels less likely since that element hasn't been consistently present during all these crashes. Though the AMD GPU in this model always gets enabled when you connect an external monitor, thunderbolt or otherwise, hence it's possibly excerbating the issues.

I'm leaning towards either corrupted system components, and that's the hopeful one. Trying this theory through a reinstall is way cheaper than buying a new computer. Another plausible alternative is unfortunately that the GPU is starting to fail.

But by all means, @SirThanksalot , start with the knock knock suggestion. If doing a clean install, take Ventura if it feels safer. It will still receive security updates for a good while. I'm just thinking there's been an underlying problem with this machine in particular and not some fundamental miss that is present on all 16" Intel Macs.

PCIE sleep support is a big deal in the GPU business. I’ve dealt with several software regressions regarding NVIDIA with it, recently at that. Why not Apple / AMD now that Intel is on the outs? Perfectly logical conclusion in fact.

Tell you what, perhaps you can explain to the OP what in a clean install is going to fix and why upgrading to Sonoma caused this? All I hear is accusations against the OP and myself for giving logical explanations why downgrading is the right move.

Actually I don't think they are; rather I think it's more likely that support through third parties has ended and Apple is merely keeping Intel machines on life support as pulling the plug is bad for PR and customer loyalty. Some configurations may fare better than others. I don't take it personally; it's a business decision of (not) dumping money into development for already sold machines, or, dumping it into new stuff so it can sell. I don't blame Apple one bit for this move, this is business as usual for a large tech company, nothing nefarious.

Now making iOS17 non-downgradable for most iPhones? That, I've got beef with, and there may be some white boards back in Cupertino showing the number of projected users they can sway to upgrade their handset by not taking time to optimize iOS17 for older models and then locking folks into iOS17 after they've upgraded...

It's probably just certain conditions with the AMD support, if I had to bet. Things like external displays, say wake from deep sleep states causing under voltage fault, see what I mean? That may have been there since Ventura in fact. Sonoma in my experience, has some larger manifestations of poor performance in my observation on my (Intel) configuration. From talking to other Mac users on other Mac forums and reviewing the code from Sonoma itself, I don't think it's a widespread issue, rather corner cases are probably impacted as I can't see the source code from the drivers, which is probably the culprit as those are likely collaboration efforts that have now ceased and Apple would now be the sole code maintainer, without help from the supplier which has the expertise... That's problematic, for sure.

Well, the trouble actually started, when I updated to Ventura. Everything worked perfectly on Monterey. I thought I'll update to Ventura, since I was 2 versions behind. Updated to Ventura, then the problem with the external display started. Annoying, but no kernel panics. Just had to connect and disconnect the screen a few times. Thought, that maybe Sonoma would fix this... well, it made everything worse :/

Ok, so I ran KnockKnock. A little confused as to what the tool is actually supposed to do, but alas. It flagged the Creative Cloud two times:

1704511399701.png

Once in Launch Items and once in Background Managed Tools, otherwise I don't see anything red. What is the correct way to use this tool?

So actually, the kernel panics while the system is running have more or less disappeared after I removed the Intel Energy Driver, Java and Parallels. What I do get each and every day are panics after the Mac has been in sleep for a long time (> 5 hours). They are different each time. So here are just a few:

last started kext at 16430432700: >AudioAUUC 1.70 (addr 0xffffff7f9f51e000, size 12288)

or

last started kext at 15678508600: >AudioAUUC 1.70 (addr 0xffffff7fb051e000, size 12288)

or

last started kext at 1579588231: >usb.IOUSBHostHIDDevice 1.2 (addr 0xffffff800e2e0000, size 32768)

...

I am now just wondering if it is a thunderbolt problem. As mentioned before, I have a display everything is connected to and the display then connects to the Mac. Well, after it connects, the Mac seems to crash, but otherwise it is working...

As for the Graphics Card, some things started happening, that worry me. One time, I did get graphical glitches. Videos on YouTube looked strange (kind of mosaic) and in Figma some UI elements were a jumbled mess. And on top of that, some browsers started dropping tabs. So I would get constant tab errors in Vivaldi and Brave (basically not loading, crashing tabs and so on), which might indicate some RAM problem? I don't want to think about this, but is the Logic Board slowly dying? I mean, I have been working for the past few hours without any problems, but they start to appear randomly. I keep doing Time Machine backups, in case I have to set up everything from scratch.

Reinstalled Sonoma from the recovery, since I can not go back to Ventura like that. I really don't want to reset the system and then finding out, that it didn't solve anything, but maybe I'll have to...

Kernel and extensions please? Shows 2, curios what they are.

Keep in mind thunderbolt and DisplayPort, hdmi, can carry audio, not just video. That panic makes sense that it may be having difficulty reestablishing audio on the digital link which is AMD driver dependent, at least in Debian, probably Darwin too. Ubuntu had that problem earlier this year and I actually couldn’t solve it; someone smarter fixed the code after a couple months of that madness.

How are your monitors connected to your dock? Any adapters involved? I had a recent case where a cheap DP to DVI dongle was throwing all sorts of errors and causing a connected computer to lock up, and another one where an adapter was causing some driver weirdness and graphical glitches.

Ok, so here are the tabs:

I could probably live without the Extensions in the second screenshot. Could they be causing the kernel panics?

Today, I tried starting up the Mac a little bit differently. Instead of plugging the display straight in, I opened up the Mac, waited for it to boot up, logged in and then connected the display. No kernel panic.

@GMShadow Everything is connected to the back of the monitor (it has USB Ports) and then one Thunderbolt cable is running from the monitor to the Mac, so the monitor acts as a hub.

Cheers,

Ok, so I have some more information and I am starting to lose hope. I tried doing the HDD FirstAid from the recovery mode and got this gem:

IMG_2267_1500.JPG

Got it on every drive, the main one and the 2 partitions. Meanwhile, I let the Mac run without it being connected to anything. Constant crashes with graphical glitches. Just had two in a row. Crash, log back in, apps open, crash again, reboot. Since my tabs in the browser are crashing, I thought I'd run a memory diagnostics tool, so I got MemTest86, and well...

So yeah... I am not sure anymore, that it is a software problem. The weird thing is, that I never had any problems on Big Sur or Monteray. If this was in fact caused by Sonoma, this would be the first time I ever experience software breaking hardware. Or this must be one of the greatest coincidences...
So am I crazy in thinking, that this still might be fixable?
