Intel i9 series feature up to 12 Cores. The most powerful CPU called i9-7920X will launch in August, while the rest will be available in June.

But, unfortunately, Apple thinks that mobile pros need an emoji bar and more color choices - not systems with the power for more demanding apps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Apple never released a machine using Broadwell-E chips... Apple has always used a very small selection of what intel provides.

What the bloody hell !!? What would anyone do with a 12-core laptop? It would be a good to "lure" the movie professionals over if that ever happened. (aside from the software) everyone could just use Adobe Premier

It is more likely that they would use a mobile Xeon processor, than a desktop processor rated at 140 watts for thermal reasons. Additionally, the i9 processors only get 2 favoured cores running at top speed for turbo 3, as opposed to the rest, so the performance would not make that much difference on most apps and games.
Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and Adobe CC may run quickly for a change, but it's hardly useful for 90% of the users.

Techspot did a review of the 10 core 6950X Broadwell-E, and compared it to, among other things, a dual CPU Xeon E5-2670 build.

you might be able to imagine a similar comparison between chips that have yet to be released.

It seems that these Extreme CPUs are aimed at people who are disappointed that they can't overclock a Xeon, and are willing to pay handsomely for the privilege.

Technically, the K series cpus are also "unlocked". I don't think I've heard of any imac users availing themselves of the option.

Well, having seen the WWDC video, the iMac Pro with 18 core xeon processor and 128gb ecc ram really looks good.
