Hi, can anyone tell me why my left side speaker is much quieter than the Right-side speaker. By that I mean when I change the balance completely to the Left it is much quieter than all the way to the right. Does this have something to do with playing music files in stereo, with one speaker perhaps putting out only Mono sound? By the way my left speaker has been making a popping noise upon startup and shutdown. Thanks.

Is the balance set more to the right in the Sound pane of System Preferences (under Output)? There's an OSX bug that shifts this balance to one side every now and then.

That sounds like hardware problems. However try it with a couple different songs as you may just be listening to a song that uses your right speaker for some parts of the music. But it sounds like a hardware problem.

It appears to happen with all songs. Damn I don't want to take my new comp in. I can't really until September, as there's no repair place for days in any direction. Would external speakers have the same problem? Hardware test would diagnos this I assume. :(

Externals should not have the same problem. Try plugging in some head phones and see if it has the same problem, if not it must be hardware.

Hardware diagnostic probable will not come up with any thing.(if you mean the one that came with your mac, apple still does that right?)

Headphones are fine, and Hardware test did not find anything. So I guess you're right it is hardware related. The new iMacs sure have had a lot of Audio problems.
