Intel iMac as fast as a 2.0 DUAL PM G5?

On common Applications, most likely -- most of the speed of the G5 was in the way Altivec was used.
But alas GCC wasn't too big on autovectorization before the switch, so many apps didn't take advantage of it and were G3-compatible applications.
For scientific apps the G5 is a big weapon, for MS Word it isn't.
Integer performance had lagged for years on the PPC until the G5 came out.

For sure! Do not pay retail price for the PM at this point as you will really end up feeling screwed when the macpro comes out and costs the same haha. You can find some great deals on used PMs so keep your eyes peeled if you do decide to purchase.

The 2GHz Core Duo iMac I feel is faster than a dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 overall. But when running tasks that are not universal (like photoshop which MacWorld always uses) the Power Mac G5 will have a good advantage.
