Intel iMac not responding to my camcorder via Firewire

I used to hook my camcorder up to my Intel iMac with a firewire cord and it would work just fine. A while back it just stop recognizing the camcorder when I would hook it up. I've even taken the same firewire cord and camcorder to a Mac store to see if the Intel iMacs there would recognize the camcorder and they did.

I need to be able to get my computer to respond to my camcorder so that I can edit film.

Has anybody experienced this problem with their iMac? If so, what did you have to do to fix it and how much did it cost you?

there have been reports of flaky firewire ports. not sure how you fix it.
