the new intel iMacs come with a 512mb standard. I opted to add 1gb from crucial and it has been working great.

I read that Mac's preform better with the same amount of ram in both of the slots- now I have 512 in one and 1gb in the other- did i make a mistake here?

You'll still get performance boost, just not quite as much as if they were matched sticks. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

would there be any difference if i put the new 1gb stick in the first slot? where the original 512mb was - and put the 512mb in the second slot?

No, it would only make a difference if you had matched pairs of 1GB RAM or 512MB RAM. Not one of one kind and one of the other. Again, the speed increase would probably be minimal, so it's not really worth worrying about.
