I'm reading all these problems with the iMac and MacBook Pro and it got me thinking... is the Mac mini perfect, as far as defects go? I haven't heard any real complaints yet. I'm thinking of getting one sometime in the near future and it seems like a smart move, especially considering it's a rev. a machine.

My mac minis are perfect, but then again so is my Imac and my MacBook Pro. I think some people are having issues but others aren't but I'm sure Apple will get everything sorted out given a bit of time.

MacMini's G4s and real gpu's were solid proven technology, the new Intel with Integrated crap graphics should be considered a rev A. Beware. (edit) we have one of the first Mini's made, never a problem

Some people are having airport problems. This is a firmware issue and will be resolved by software. hopefully soon.

Do the new Intel Minis exhibit that dim monitor problem that the PPC version did? Maybe that is one of the reasons that the power supply of the new model is beefier?

My "Rev A" Intel Mac Mini is more perfect that my previous Rev E Powerbook G4, but ah well, some just like to delude themselves :)

Intel CPUs coupled with Intel chipsets is the true ultimate stable platform, bar none.

It is DVI.. digital. Nothing in 1s and 0s to make a screen brighter or dimmer isn't it.

My intel Imac is gorgeous and perfect. I never liked any mac I had so much.

Perhaps it is because your Intel iMac is the very first real PC you ever owned, unlike the various Toy computers you had before it

Many people complain about the integrated graphics, and yes, it could have been better, but there's no room for a grahics card, with 2 ram-slots, core duo/solo, extre connections and more, but as long as you buy enough RAM ($100 for 1 GB, not bad), the graphics have enough to run on, and with the new processors, it can run up to 1080p with enough RAM, so it is actually better than the old one.:D

The mac mini is not really rev a, it's all based on proven intel technology as much as the mac mini was based on proven ibook technology. Core Duo's use a 945G based chipset which has been battle tested for quite a while on pentium D's, since about may 2005.

Actually, that isn't true. There is enough space on the top surface of the logic board (bottom-right corner as you look at it from above) for two internal ExpressCard/34 slots. Alternatively, the Airport card could be rotated 90 degrees, moved over a little and an internal (or even backplane mounting) ExpressCard/34 located next to it.

The reasons why ExpressCard/34 and/or a dedicated GPU aren't part of the design come down costs and the want to protect sales of the iMac.

Edit: Changed PCIe to ExpressCard/34 for clarity.

True, i get sick of the people who think a GPU chip cant fit where the Intel crap graphics chip fits. BS! If you are talking a full blown video card its true there is no room but GPU chips for labtops are tiny and complete GPU's can be put on a chip . Reason for Integrated cheapo graphics are costs and imac. Thats why MacMini got saddled with worst graphics in the industry. Integrated graphics are cheap crap. Stop fooling yourselves with spin. Intel gave those things away with its cpu.

Okay. It couldn't'a been too bad with an X800/X600 with 64 MB DDR, imac is still a lot better. Though I wish you could upgrade to a dedeicated graphics card from the Apple Store.

Agreed. A backplane mounting ExpressCard/34 would have been the way to go - let 3rd parties develop X600, X800 and X1300 PCIe for the Mac mini. AFAIK, there aren't currently any ExpressCard/34 graphics cards available but several vendors plan to have one available for 2007. Plus, people could choose to use the PCIe for an internal modem, FW800 or various other uses instead as they become available.

I think they should keep it like it is. FW800? In MacMini? It's only for external HDD with like 2 TB. Not for a MacMini guy. And still, get a USB-modem if you want a modem so badly. I just want better graphics. And, I don't see why we need 4 USB. If you get an Apple Key board, you got plenty, and if you get wireless, you don't need them. I know ACD's are not meant for MacMini, but they got two more. I think 4 is too many. 3 USB! Yirrr!!

Could just just give it a rest? We KNOW that you don't like the integrated graphics, you don't need to spew about it in every thread that has anything to do with the new Mini. We get it.

I know this is absurd, but anyone tried doing 1080p video with a top of the line Intel MacMini on a 23" ACD? I wonder if it can pull such a thing, even with 2 GB RAM.

Speaker pop

The Intel Mac mini fails to mute the sound and power down the audio amplifier before going into sleep mode (with pulsing led).

The result is a very loud 'pop' on my speakers when the PMU powers down the audio circuitry. Luckily, I dont have expensive speakers and don't amplify the output much. Someone less fortunate than myself could end up having some very expsnsive speakers destroyed by the power surge.

I have also noticed that the GPU doesn't take kindly to the monitor being unplugged or plugged in while the Mac mini is on. It is all too easy to make the GPU crash simply by unplugging and re-plugging the display cable a few times. Luckily, if you have an Apple keyboard you can just use the hotkey combination to reboot the Mac.

My core duo/1GB mini is fine.

I am very satisfied with my new mini which replaced my 1.25 G4/512mb mini. I am not a gamer nor am I interested in photoshop. The new machine does all I want to do. I particularly like Front Row with the ability to view video podcasts in full screen. I am also not interested in running Windows on the mini. It is less expensive to buy a cheap headless PC with Windows built-in than to buy VPC and a copy of Windows. I figure if one wants more powerful graphics, they should obviously buy a more expensive machine.
