Apple support just told me that there should be a patch on software update for Intel Macs tonight! The guy told me specifically that it would help with the Safari issues I've been having (constant random crashes). I don't know if it will include the Frontrow fix they've been promising. He told me to run software update late this afternoon or tonight, as there should be something available.

Just thought I'd pass on the news to the rest of you with Intel iMacs.

Cool cool. Unfortunately the only problem I have with my iMac (the sleeping issue) hasn't been linked to software. I really don't feel like sending my computer back. I've just decided to never sleep it again. ; )

Having had all 3 of my new iMac's with this problem, I finally think I have it "resolved"! At least on the latest one:)(20', 128 vram, 1165 build, 2 gig)

Set it to sleep after 2 hours, hard drive to sleep whenever possible, display to sleep after 1 hour and screensaver to kick in after 15 minutes. Have unchecked the box for dimming before going to "sleep".

Played around with these settings for weeks - running 3 days now on this setting and :

mouse wakes machine up - yeah!!!!
Keyboard functions normally - woo hoo:)
do not lose network connections - can we say Hallelujah!!!!
fire wire drive can stay connected and does not cause me to reboot system - or move to USB

Please note I had zeroed out and re installed all software PRIOR to playing with settings. ALso have network robustness turned on and have the mighty (worthless)mouse plugged into the keyboard. This is the same keyboard/mouse that would freeze up if you looked at it wrong.

So knocking on whatever wood is around - I am finally THRILLED/HAPPY with my iMac! A few remaining issues - but certainly not a biggee in the scheme of things.

I have the 1165 build as well. The problem has been sporadic.. I could definately go about 4-5 days without having a problem waking it up, so don't get too excited yet. ; )

How much you want to bet that it is 90% having to do with someone cracking the system to be able to run OS X on generic PC's?

Haha, you think Apple would release a patch just for this?

This doesn't affect me since I'm running on one of those "crazy outdated" G4 Pbooks. :p

Ya had to go and spoil my day:D

Yea...I knowthat its sporadic...I had one of the first machines (ordered within seconds of keynote) and it had EVERY problem you have read about. 2nd machine had it beat - had even more problems(also had the 71 build).

This one...well...I am holding my breath - have it 8 days now and I have really have pushed it. So far....dare we say it....so good. There it's out:)

Not perfect - definetely an issue with the airport card(all have it - as in ALL Intel iMac's) but there are software workarounds for those. Unfortunately the software workarounds are unique to your config - as in your router yadyadayad.

The ATI card also has issues as does the drivers - really is not so much a build issue as much as it is in how bad the build exposed your already "bad drivers/video card". Also has software workarounds that fortunatley have little variability and hopefully we should see a series of "patches" that make it better. The patches really can't "fix" it...anyways won't bore you anymore:)

'Cause if the sleep stuff comes back - mine will never get a chance to sleep again:D :D

Dang, mine was 40.6MB... and apparently didn't fix my Safari problems! Damn! And after an hour on the phone with Apple this morning!

I have now spent two hours on the phone with Apple trying to deal with this. The first one was the worst, because the guy didn't know what Rosetta was and needed to "study it" and kept putting me on hold. Guh. They won't accept that it's a hardware issue, even though it does it in safe mode, because "Firefox doesn't have the same problem". I don't get how it's relevant, but ok. They won't let me replace the iMac just yet. Dang it, I just want a computer that works!

Yeah, I emailed them crash logs and whatnot, and they're going to "meet with engineers" and then call me back. I have no clue what's going on... :(

Did not fix airport etiher  Damn Apple!!!

My connection speed on http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest has fallen either further.

Mmm. I tested at 5670 kbps down, 364 kbps up. I believe my service is 6mbps/384mbps.. that upload cap is killer.

Oh yeah, I don't use Airport. My iMac is in my office, right next to my router so it doesn't make sense to use wireless.

2482 Down, 295 Up. I got better down this afternoon (3400+), but I guess since it's a cable modem, it's shared, and more people are online at night...

I got 4722 / 350. My service is supposed to be 5mbps/384 kbps. Guess I'm doing pretty good during peak time. I still have a guy coming out tomorrow because we have random outages that seem to coincide with cold weather. I think I have a bad connector outside or something.

Connections via cable are unaffected. It's damn Airport speeds that are shagged. When connecting via ethernet I get about 1700/250 on my 2mb connection. Airport its like 500/70 That's a huge difference.....

Yep, it's definitely still not right.

Just used Airport to download a file. It came at approximately 200KB/s. Plugged a cable in and disabled Airport and got 800KB/s.

I am on a 54g network. Does anybody know of a way to test network speed rather than Internet speed? I'd like to test the connection speed of my computer to the router itself.

To fix this i believe you need to go into the Airport Admin app and change your key encryption type away from using TKIP and to AES encryption instead. Your Airport should return to normal speeds.

-Garry- hopefully yours is the same issue and will be fixed by doing this too.

Nifty, how is patching working nowadays between Macs and Intel Macs? Has Apple said anything about patches eventually being Universal? Or will they always be seperated due to inherent bugs specific to the Intel hardware I wonder.
