Intel MBP -- broken screen - can't delete HDD

Hi

I have a ~2015? MBP 15" with a broken screen. I've put it off, but I am trying to delete the hard drive so I can recycle the machine. Unfortunately the main screen is completely used (a few vertical bars). Works with an external monitor. Problem is I can't get into the Recovery mode with an external monitor and I can't find a way to choose to boot into recovery from the main OS.

I'm at a loss about what to do next.

Hooked up an external mouse and kb to see if I could select command-R and then go into clamshell mode, but never works.

IF you are 100% sure to recycle it, open it up remove the SSD and crush/break it.
It's the fastest way - unfortunately the screws are P5 pentalobe.
