Intel has announced details of their UMP processors, A100 and A110. This is why they sold off the ARM subsidiary. Could these be potential iPhone processors? I suspect maybe the next generation will be more interesting but here are the details as reported by the Reg:

These are for things like set top boxes with low power requirements, not for battery driven products.

One of these, or a preliminary version, at least, is in the Apple TV - if I recall correctly, the :apple:TV uses a 1GHz derivative of the "Dothan" Pentium-M, just like this chip is supposed to be based on.

The plot thickens...:)

I can't wait for the iPhone with a WiMax chip :)

Hopefully the next revision of Apple computers will have some sort of WiMax chip in it, constant wireless internet ftw :)

I did. "Cuts down power consumption to 3 Watt". Totally unacceptable for the iPhone. 2 x 200 MHz ARM is far less than 1 Watt.

Err... and I didn't say either cpu would be in the iPhone, did I?

But I did point out the error in your previous statement, "These are for things like set top boxes with low power requirements, not for battery driven products."

The A100/A110 cpus are specifically designed for use in MIDs and UMPCs (which are mobile devices using battery power, etc.) They are really only a short-time solution, and will be replaced next year with more power-efficient versions.

Possibly you've confused the two A100/A110 cpus with Intel's new CE 2110 Media Processor, which could be used in "set top boxes."
