Intel Xeon E5365 anyone got information?

Hey there,

I'm considering doing the processor upgrade on my MP 1.1 . I believe to know most of the important things, but yesterday I found a processor that I have a hard time finding information about.

It's the Intel Xeon E5365. The only information I found was a report from 2007 saying that there might be heat issues: http://fudzilla.com/processors/item/11825-xeon-e5365-at-3ghz-to-dissipate-150w

Can anyone tell me more? It should be compatible, but since I haven't found information, has anyone used this particular processor?
Is there a version with G0 stepping?

You mean the X5365. Clovertowns is what you want. When I had my mac pro 1.1, I installed the E5345's. Made a big difference coming from the 2ghz dual cores. If your getting them real cheap, its worth the jump. But would suggest you skip this, find a 2008 motherboard and swap them. At least you will get 64 bit processing.

The G0 stepping of the x5365 is called "SLAED" and is identical with the G0 stepping ("SLAEG") of the x5355 in terms of TDP and idle power. Especially idle power is basically identical to that of the original 5150's in the 1,1, therefore allowing for problem-free operation after a swap.

Stay clear from the B3 stepping ("SLAC3"), which has 150W TDP and with 50W twice the idle power of the original 5150, thus probably requiring manual fan speed adjustments.

Can't tell if the X5365 are the same as the E5365, I found both versions on ebay. Anyway, I decided to go for the 5160, they run for little money. And since good coded apps, that can really utilize all cores are still rare nowadays, chances are I won't notice a big difference between quad and octocore.

But swapping the mainboard sounds interesting. Does the 3.1 Mainboard fit in the 1.1 case? How much is the average price on these...if you could give me as much information as possible that'd be great, I haven't thought of this option! Thanks!

E = engineering sample, usually more bugs/unfinished microcode and less optimized (e.g. power consumption), that can lead to problems or not, depending on the program code you're running.

Thanks for that information Neodym! Also for the upgrade from 1.1 to 3.1, from what I heard so far it's quite a hassle, and from a financial point of view also not worth it.

That E on E5365 does not mean engineering sample. Mean energy efficient.
