Hi,

So I work at a big electronics store and somebody was interested in buying the demo macbook pro (SR). We didn't have the restore disks but we had the macbook restore disks. I discussed with my colleagues and I pleaded to them that it probably wouldn't work, but we tried it anyway. Interestingly, if you put the mb cds inside the mbp and boot from them, a kernel panic is induced! It's obviously not the computer...but do you think I should inform apple about this glitch? or is it not really a glitch?

It isn't mean to work - you are only able to restore the computer using the discs that came with it. This includes the drivers (the MacBook doesn't have an illuminating keyboard, so their CD won't include the drivers for it) and other bits n bobs that are relevant and required for that certain computer.

Not sure why a kernel panic was induced though, but Apple won't care because you aren't meant to do it - it is like sticking diesel in a petrol engine and expecting it to work properly.

The kernel panic is probably because it doesn't have all the drivers or has the wrong drivers for the hardware.

Well the MacBook restore disk would have come with only drivers for the integrated graphics, pre-Santa Rosa processor socket, chipset, etc etc etc. I can imagine that a kernel panic happened awfully quickly since the CD was trying to force hardware drivers for completely different stuff.

No sparks, right? :p

Lol, no sparks.

but I think Apple should make an error message that simply says "wrong CD inserted" or something because the KP is quite scary!

and the analogy of diesel fuel is quite appropriate and accurate, I must say!
