The new Mac Pro looks surprisingly like the back of an MDD...although personally I think that they should include a block of cheddar cheese with the computer.
So did anyone else hear about the PPC related news from WWDC
We laugh, but if they actually offered a new G4 at that price, there would be takers.
In my opinion, Apple hasn't made a computer as nice looking as the MDD (or really any member of the G4 series) since. The G5s/cMP's are definitely gorgeous. Even the trash can is beautiful. But none of it has the same character as the G4s did...
This new Mac pro is.. I don't want to say ugly, because it isn't.. But I would definitely put the looks of the G5 and cMP way ahead of it. I am also super biased against not having optical drives in a tower. I hate new "gaming PC" cases for this reason. 5.25" bays are make or break for me personally when picking out a case.
It's unique I'll give it that. Clamshell iBooks aren't the most aesthetically pleasing notebooks around but they are still cool looking in their own way. Thats about how I feel about this new MP.

I adored the inceptive Power Mac G4 when it showed up in late 1999 and the unrealized possibilities of offering that appearance in hues other than graphite (such as a then-speculated Grape PM G4 which never came to be). It’s why the G4/350 was the first computer I bought (actually, it was the 400, but the order was filled hours after Jobs did the October downgrade).
As Apple removed the iMac/Power Mac acrylic/pinstripe elements, beginning with Quicksilver and then going full-bore with the Mirror Drive Doors, the G4 case looked terribly off, even aftermarket-bro gauche. Those effects did not belong on that acrylic form factor borrowed from the brilliant (and gorgeous) Blue(berry) & White G3.
As for regarding clamshells as “not the most aesthetically pleasing”… yeah, but no.
That's the reason that for whatever else it can or cannot do, I have always desired a PowerMac G3 B&W. And I finally got one a year or so back thanks to a forum member.

It has been over twenty years, but if memory serves, I think I may have audibly gasped when I saw the 2001: A Space Odyssey advert for the first time with the Blue & White G3. It would have been at work. It was this model (and not the iMac in Bondi Blue) which got me to sit up and take serious notice to what was going on with Apple stuff.
When I was in high school, a B&W with a matching 17" display sat in the back of one teacher's classroom, and it caught my eye and attention then and I knew I wanted one even though I hated Apple stuff at the time. Our school computer lab was stocked with tray loader iMacs(which actually would have been a few years old, but not ancient, when I started high school) and they were generally terrible.
In any case, when I took journalism and worked on the school newspaper my senior year-2005-2006-that B&W was still in service running Pagemaker. I got to use it SOME, although not a ton. Around that time, I was getting seriously interested in photography too, and a few folks I paid attention to-like Ken Rockwell-made me lust after Macs. I remember KR getting a Quad with a 30" Cinema around the time I started college, and I wanted one BADLY-I can remember playing with them at Best Buy and that display was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen.
Of course, now I have that stuff many times over, although I need to get a 30" Cinema going again(I need to order a new PSU). My primary display on my Mac Pro these days is a 27" LED Cinema, which honestly is in every way better than the 30" aside from the annoying glossy screen, but there's still something great about the 30".
I really should just go out though and buy one of the new displays announced yesterday. I think by the time you pay extra for the stand and then put an AR coating on it, you end up at around $7K.

That new display is so far beyond my budget that I’m not liable to touch one until they’re at least ten years old.
If it was Quicksilver I'd be one of them.
I'm down for the 28 core MP with 1.5TB ram, and 4 of those 6K displays.
All I need now is about $50,000 in free money!
I'm on the lookout for another one as well. I've had three of them, and regretted it every time I let one go. The nearest one from my location, if I were to drive to get one, is 80 miles away and $100. Nope and nope.
