Interesting NYT article on Vista

Wow, that's quite an article. I'm pretty sure you don't have to login to read the NYT any more.

Early/mid in 2007, two people asked me to spec out Windows-based computers for them.
The first was my sister in early 2007. She read up on Vista but wanted to go with it anyway. So I spec'ed out a really nice HP Media Center desktop (running Vista Home Premium) with other stuff that she wanted, including a dual-DVI NVIDIA card and a USB WiFi adapter.
For the better part of the first 9 months, she had been having all sorts of problems with her computer - hanging, crashing, losing WiFi, etc. Loading updates and drivers seemed a crapshoot... She was VERY upset with her experience. I was very upset with how much time I had to spend just listening to my sister complain.
The second -- my best friend's mom -- wanted a new laptop to replace her aging one. I advised her of the Vista situation, and she wisely told me to look into one running XP. I spec'ed a very nice HP/Compaq laptop running XP, set up a WiFi network at her home, etc. I haven't heard a peep from her or her family. I ask, and they tell me that they have no problems. The whole family is happy - when they come home to visit, they bring their laptops and enjoy Internet access.
Later in the year, my wife's desktop died. I explained to her that, given the nature of the problem (mobo), it would be far more economical to buy a new computer. She uses the PC for video editing. I found a great Media Center HP PC on sale and told my wife. I gave her the usual speech on Vista. She tells me to go buy it anyway. It was a real nightmare for her (and thus me) when she first started using it. First, she really needed foreign language support. In XP Pro, it was easy to do. In Vista Home Premium, it can't be done at the OS level. She is constantly sending/receiving with friends and family in her native language. Also, she has video chats with a friend overseas too. (They don't know English.) And, my wife has had all sorts of other weird and typical problems with Vista.
Maybe Vista has matured by now, but it sure has been painful for us. And, keep in mind that we're not bleeding-edge early adopters...
