Interesting to read just how wrong some pundits were....

Well to his defense he is part of a government agency... Thank kind of explains it.
 
That was hilarious! It seems like Apple went far and beyond to baffle every 'Tech Guru' there was, including this one.
 
He is right in that past IPS displays have used more power than TN displays. His mistakes were blindly extending that knowledge to a future device and assuming that Apple would release something that couldn't get close to their claims for it.
 
Did Apple develop some special new proprietary technology to power the screen for this long? Maybe that's why the competing tablets only have half the battery life.
 
The world is full of Rob Enderles. A lot of them also happen to post in Apple forums.

To achieve most of their extended battery life on their products they do stuff like block access to flash, under power signal chips like bluetooth and wifi, and keep more then one application from running at a time. Granted the screen technology contributes to the savings also, but they basically degrade the options to give the impression of a better device.

Think of a 13" macbook. It's screen is only a few inches bigger, but the battery is at least 3-4 times bigger then the ipads, so why doesn't it have a 30-40 hour battery life? It does all those other things, thats a big part of it.

Even Steve Jobs himself admits to the flash/battery issue:

Except that he doesn't...so, uhm...I guess that doesn't explain it. (Unless there's some "magazine agency" that I'm not yet aware of.)

Did you see his doofus follow-up about Jobs contacting him? He tries to claim that when he said Jobs wasn't telling the truth it didn't mean he thought Jobs was lying. He was just being untruthful.

Or something. It's hard to explain since he pretty much makes no sense.

Gee let's see...the MB has things like...moving parts! Both HDD and spinning media (ie CD/DVD). And a larger screen. And a dual core processor which consumes much more power.

They are not 'degrading' anything to give an impression of a better device. They created a better device.

Really?

You're not gonna even mention the difference between an Apple A4 and an Intel Core 2 Duo at all? Probably the biggest difference between the 2 devices and you don't think it's worth mentioning?

Even if you account for the moving parts, the math still doesn't work out. I'm not the one saying that they left of flash because of battery life, steve jobs says it himself in that article. He claims an 85% drop in battery life if they included it on the ipad. So if they leave flash off just to allow for longer battery life, they are degrading the way you see over 90% of the websites, just to give you 10 hours of battery. Hence a better sounding experience at the cost of functionality.

Same goes for the all aluminum body. Sure it would be much less expensive to use plastic, and it would also help with improved wifi signal, but the device wouldn't look as pretty, so they sacrifice price and functionality to make it look more neat.

Hopeless.

Shorter battery life = bad. Longer battery life = good.

No Flash = Good.

That 90% figure you're throwing around...keep dreaming. 9x% of the mainstream *video* content that people watch is already either available (YouTube, ABC), or announced or in trial phase (NBC, CBS).

If you want to see tons of gorpy Flash ads or play ridiculous gamez, have at it kidso.

Wow. Higher voltage chips in MacBook? More power-requiring OS? Think.

Yeah. I'd love to see that math. I probably visit about 25 sites a day on my iPhone and I encounter about 2 flash pages I can't see per week.

So that's 2 sites out of 175 which is about 1.1%

I'm interested to know what sites he visits that 90% is his number!

Well I think the issue is sort of a penetration vs. practical usage thing. SO many ads use Flash. And ads are pretty much literally everywhere. So Adobe can throw around figures like '10 bajillion websites use Flash!'

Then there are dumb (IMO) games, a random bank log in page here and there, and poof! 'The entire web requires Flash to be seen properly!'

Most importantly, and undeniably (b/c it's already happening) websites will increasingly either switch to HTML5 or serve up multiple types in parallel depending on the browser. iPad? Here's some HTML5 goodness for you...
