Intermitant Wireless Problem

I have the old model of Airport Extreme running the latest firmware (5.7) but seem to be having some issues with only my macbook pro. Occasionally, the signal will just drop out, even though it previously had most of thee bars lit. Recently, it has been failing to re-obtain an IP address even though it has a good signal for several minutes. I tried using manual IP settings but when I re-connect to the Airport Extreme, I cant even ping it. The only thing that seems to work is rebooting my macbook pro. Obviously this is very inconvenient. I have other wireless devices on the network that hold weak, but very steady signals. Could this have been a problem caused by software update? Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it without restarting?
