Intermittent Blu-Ray Drive Failure

I've got a Mac Pro 5,1 running Mavericks that's been exhibiting an odd problem the last few days.

It's got a Pioneer Blu-Ray Drive in it, and on occasion, when I press F12 or use the menu bar to Eject the drive tray, it instead pops up with the "You have inserted a blank DVD" message - but the tray doesn't open, and the only way to get out of that window is to click "Cancel".

Occasionally, this will change the Eject menu bar from the name of the drive to "No Drives".

Restarting immediately clears the problem, but I'm puzzled.

Don't know the answer to your question, but am curious: The issue aside, have you been able to Blu-Ray discs on your Mac? And if so, how?

MakeMKV to pull the files off the Blu-Ray disk, and then Handbreak to get them into .mp4 files. So no watching them live, but you can digitize them easily.
 
Don't have an answer for your f-key problem but have you been able to put the cursor over the "disc" icon on the desktop and do an eject from that? Also, doesn't MakeMKV offer a disk open/eject button within its icon bar?

Cool! Thanks for info. Is nice to have another option for viewing full 1080 besides downloading through iTunes, but that doesn't require processing first. Do you happen to know if it works with internal drives in addition to the external USB 2.0 drives as mentioned on their website?
 
I play Blu-ray movies directly on my 30" ACD from my Mac Pro with VLC, and I love that I can get the movie playing faster than via my regular Blu-ray player and HDTV. It takes less time to set it up and start the film than it does to navigate the regular player menus and annoying other things, such as previews and anti-piracy notices.

The problem is there's not a disc in there in the first place - it does this in response to things that involve interacting with the drive, like ejecting a disc.

Though I had issues with it in the past due to the "Put Drives To Sleep When Possible" setting, which the new OS looks to have turned back on. Lets see if that fixes it...

True, I had forgotten that. I've been mostly working on digitizing the collection anyway.
