I have a 3 week old 2009 Imac that lately has been having an intermittent pop sound coming from the speakers. This occurs when no sound is playing and there should be no sound coming out of the speakers.

I have the same popping sound occur on my MacBook Pro whenever an electrical device in the room, such as the small refrigerator or ceiling fan, turns off. In my case, it happens due to old wiring in the house. How's your wiring?

If you think wiring could be the cause, try using the iMac in a different room or on a different circuit to see if the popping still occurs. GSM cell phones can cause audio problems as well, but not usually pops.

Good luck. Hope your iMac is not to blame.

something like this happened to me with my MacBook sometime last week. Except all sound coming out was just kind of a popping noise - i restarted and everything was fine after that.

i was powered via a power conditioner. weird.

I have a cheap staples surge protector. The problem started happening for about a week now, not the first 2 weeks of ownership. I cant think of any interference that would be causing this. It almost sounds like if you had speakers that were on and you plugged a microphone into the microphone jack "pop!"

I had a PC with speakers on the same spot before I got the mac and it never had this issue.
