I’ve had the same issue with 2 new iPads, the first was an iPad Air 5 which I sent back for the issue, the second is an M2 iPad Pro which I still have. It did not happen on my old iPad Air 3 but I’ve sold that now so can’t go back to it.

basically every so often the touch screen is unresponsive for a short time (a second or so). So say I’m scrolling then it’ll stop and not respond to touch then start again. Also occasionally on typing it will miss the odd letter. The problem happens often enough that it spoils the use a bit and was why I sent the Air back, but the fact that it also happens on the pro makes me assume it’s software. Is this happening to anyone else as I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere? I put the 16.2 beta on to see if it would help and it’s maybe a little better but still happening unfortunately. I have submitted feedback in the app but no response. I will report it to Apple support next.

Take note of the weather.

When it’s winter, my hands can get pretty dry so I’d often have issues with the touchscreen.

My current iPad Mini 6 and the faulty one it replaced both (15.7.1) have sluggish traits. I often have to press the favourites/bookmarks button three times before it registers and other icons frequently take a couple of touches. The worst issue for me is text input. Using the keyboard is like typing through treacle compared to even a budget Android device. I just assume that’s the way iOS is.

That's strange behavior. Keyboard input on my Mini 6 on 16.1.1 is no different than on my M1 12.9 and I don't see any touch response issues.

It happens to me too, a disaster on my ipad pro 2020 11", especially in Safari, it freezes and does not respond

PS: Since ipad OS16 the feeling is similar to when other iPads became obsolete and could not keep up with the new software

I haven’t had the keyboard issue but the occasional lack of touch/tap response has been quite noticeable on my 14 Pro Max as well as my M1 and now M2 iPad Pro. I also see my wife tapping at the screen of her 2018 iPad Pro and then giving up going to the sleep/wake button to wake the screen up. I’ve had to do that on my 14 once or twice. I do believe this is an ios 16 issue that is intermittent but noticeable. There are various threads on multiple forums mentioning this so it’s not an isolated occurrence.

On my 14PM occasionally I’ll tap the screen to wake it and I see that, takes a second or two for it to respond and wake. This has been mentioned with so many devices of various versions there’s no reason to think there’s a hardware issue. But annoying nonetheless.

Try this:

I may have isolated the problem. I have the accessibility zoom switched on because I have a vision impairment and sometimes need to 3 finger tap to zoom in more. Just tried switching this off and from what I tell, no more touch issues. So I’m pretty sure that’s the issue. I’ll feedback to Apple

Can I ask why? I had it turned on so turned it off. No difference
At first it worked for me...
but soon it failed again.

I have an open case with apple, I will have to wait for future updates.

I had an odd issue the other day with my 10.5 pro (on 16.1.1) - firstly in the maps app, I was trying to drag the map around with two fingers and instead it was spinning the map around, as if it wasn’t registering the other finger moving - after a few attempts I could get it to work but it kept going back to “pivot” mode.

Then later in the photos app, I found I couldn’t tap on a photo in the library to open it - instead it would immediately go into “selection” mode (as if I’d tapped the select button in top right) and select the picture with a blue tick. This drove me nuts - I simply couldn’t open a picture without a whole selection process starting up again.

Rebooting the ipad solved both problems and it’s been for a couple of days since. Definitely a weird bug lurking somewhere.
