Hi,

Not 100% sure this is a problem with my iBook or not but I could use some advice at this time to try and isolate the problem.

My iBook has intermittently stopped connecting to my wireless router, a Netgear DG834G. I've had the iBook for about 9 months and in all that time it's been totally stable in finding the network but over the last few days, it's taken to intermittently not being able to find a signal. The wireless symbol is totally greyed out: the drop down menu does not show my normal network and, if I open up internet connect I get no network selected.

I don't think it's the router as my windows laptop is still connecting ok. In case it was interference from somewhere that was affecting just the iBook I've tried chaning the transmission channels but again, to no avail. I've rebooted the router etc as well to see if that would help but again, no joy.

I'm wondering if I've somehow managed to change something on the iBook by accident. I mention this as, last saturday I was asked by a fried to setup his (identical) router as he had been having difficulty. I took my iBook so I could test it. His router was set to the default name and I set up his security to WPA PSK (again, same as mine) and, just to test, used the same passkey. My iBook connected straight away and so I then showed him how to input his own passkey etc so he could secure his system. Since I brought the iBook home, I've had the intermittent connection problem. I have no idea if the events are connected in some way but I thought I'd try to provide everyone with as much info as possible.

My iBook is up to date with all system updates. Is it possible that in connecting to this other (almost identical) network I've corrupted something? Alternatively, could it be that I've got a problem with my airport?

As I've been typing this on my main pc, I've had the iBook running alongside me and it's placed about 3 ft away from the router. Just as I'm writing this the wireless indicator has gone totally black from grey and has connected on it's own without me doing anything.

I did have a similar issue with a Linkysys router that I returned to replace with this netgear but I've had this router about 18 months and this is the first time this has happened. If the windows laptop wasn't connecting I'd suspect the router but this is really confusing me.

I'm totally at a loss here and would appreciate any suggestions whatsoever to try to resolve the issue. Thanks in advance for any comments

Sounds like the connection between the Airport card and antenna has come loose. Open up the airport card slot, and make sure that the antenna cord is properly inserted into the Airport card.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check on how to do that and give it a go.

Cheers :)

I found some articles on how to do this but I'm a little bit confused and not sure if I'm either doing something stupid or looking at the wrong instructions.

I open up the iBook ok and remove the keypad but it then talks about a grill which has to be removed in order to access the card. However, when I remove the grill, all I can see is the ram. Can someone point me in the right direction please and point out what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
