Im just wondering if i can use my internal mic for gaming on steam rather than buying a headset, is it possible?

You can. You don't need a headset. You also don't need to back up your data.

I still use a cheap Logitech USB headset I got off of eBay for $12 shipped a few years ago.

Or if you have an iPhone with the headphones with the microphone on it, why not use that in a pinch?

He meant the headphones that come with it. You can use them with the iMac (and the microphone of course).

yes but wouldn't the sound from the actual game come through the headset aswell?

no point if both sounds overlap, or is there a way of changing it?
 
I used the iMac microphone with teamspeak for about 4 years. No complaints from me or the guys I fly with. I also have a headset with microphone in it, rarely use it though unless the wife is in the office with me.
