When turning the sound above 60-70%, sound goes very odd, not like normal distortion, but kind of tinny and strange, almost like its being cut off but also inverted(?). This also happens when the volume is set lower but with noisier parts of music (or whatever you are listening to). Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I think I am also having this problem. Whenever there is audio output (only from the external speakers, not from the headphones) I get distortion every minute or so for just a second. It's like the sound goes out of phase and then returns to normal. Seeing as how I am producing music, this is very annoying.

Suggested fix anyone?

Well to rule out the sound card does it do this with external speakers as well? How about with an audio track and not music? I know the speakers aren't the best in the iMac's but they should sound fine just underpowered. Mine sound fine and haven't cut out however, I don't have the new iMac I have the C2D and run external speakers at this time
