I misread the OP, the internal speaker isn't as good. But since I only hear that on startup, it's a non issue for me.Just curious about the sound quality of the Mac Studio's internal speaker?
Are they as bad as the M1 Mac mini's - the yardstick by which bad speakers are judged - or are they useable?
True... but my M1 Mac mini's speaker is so bad, even the startup chime is painful.Who is judging those speakers on sound quality? 😆😆 They are for system sounds at most.
I didn't hear the Mac Studio speaker, but I very much doubt it is better than the iMac speakers. To me, they are better than the M1 iMacs speakers but then I have hearing aids also.
Chris Hau talks about the sound quality of the Mac Studio/M1 Max speakers in this video:
Read OP again. They're better than my iMac 2012 27". I think they're pretty good. Definitely no HK or BW though.
They basically sound like a cheap $15 speaker that you'd get off of ebay, turned all the way up and placed inside of a sealed box. My kids have a pair of $20 Logitech speakers that sound better than the Mac Studio's speaker.

...and putting $1 speakers in a headless desktop would be a waste of 50c.Unfortunately, I can confirm this is accurate. $7000 computer. 50 cent speaker.
Correct and that’s how it should be. This machine is a headless desktop. It’s made to be used with other peripherals, including speakers.Unfortunately, I can confirm this is accurate. $7000 computer. 50 cent speaker.
This !They're definitely terrible but I never expected otherwise. I've always considered external speakers to be essential in my setup.
My m1 mini and my Studio sit one atop the other, so for ***** and giggles I compared the speakers on each with a couple of tracks. I'm not going to pretend I did a big double-blind test, but The Studio's speaker is better than the mini's. Still pretty crap, but definitely, clearly better.FWIW it’s better than the Mac Pro 5,1’s internal speaker
I don’t mind watching some YouTube videos or listening to a podcast using the internal speaker. It saves me turning on all my gear when I’m not doing ‘real work’ (music)
- The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
Expectations may vary - I'd never expect a headless desktop to have speakers good for anything more than system beeps. The Studio speaker(s?) are more than adequate in that respect and tick the "better than nothing" box - I've heard worse portable radios, and the speakers in my 4k display are, well, differently bad.For my $4500 Mac Studio, I'd expect the speakers to be at least like my 12 year old mid 2010 iMac this is replacing.
