AT&T and Apple have almost made it impossible for us to use our iphones internationally without racking up data charges.

For us who want to use our iphone internationally for calls and only use the wireless connect to download data it is virtually impossible.

There is 'no way' of turning of the Edge network and stopping these data charges. If the iphone cannot find a wireless access point it automatically switches to Edge which means internationally we are always accessing data via edge whether we wish to or not.

We should have a choice in using our iphones internationally and be able to turn off the Edge network feature.

We need to all complain to AT&T and get them to add a disable feature for the Edge network. A setting that would enable wireless connect only.

Then we could use our iphones internationally without racking up data charges

Anybody got news on tjis. I am roaming in Denmark and have the same problem

If you set "autocheck" in Mail to "manual," and never open the mail app, Safari, or any other app that needs to download data, would there be any roaming charges? Surely there's not a charge just when the phone is looking for the network?

I seem to remember from one of the $3000 bill threads that there's now an unlimited international roaming data plan, for something like $30 per month. It wouldn't answer your problem, but it would sure help....

i spoke with AT&T and they tell me there is only one international roaming data plan and that is for like something like 25 mbs of data monthly for a fixed cost.....can't remember, something like 20-25 dollars. I'm pretty certain that there is NO unlimited int'l roaming data plans for the iphone

I was just thinking... it might be easier and quicker to ask the hacker community for such a tool.

We know they're able to play with some of the radios, so perhaps they already know how to turn on/off access as well.

Worth a shot. Apple doesn't seem vocally responsive to its first phone users at this point. That's what happens when you become a huge corporation.

Something in its infancy, with fanatic users like the iPhone, should be distributed from a small hungry company instead.

Re At&T. The roaming plan gives you 20Mb/month, $.005/KB over that amount. all for $20/month with a 12-month contract, $175 early termination charge. Standard data roaming in $.02/KB. Oh, and only in 19 countries.

Averaging my usage over the last month, I use 5MB of edge per day. That works out to $100/day with standard international data roaming.

Minimum cost of international data roaming is $240/year. For $240, you would get 12 MB at $.02/KB ($20/MB). So, plug in your usage pattern to see the cost benefit. For me, I would get about 3-5 days (assuming I use the data a bit less while on vacation) before I would benefit from the roaming plan. Still, very expensive either way.

The international plan is not practical for those who are on vacation. Only those that travel frequently.

Cheers

Could you change the APN to something invalid?

I don't have my iPhone yet, and I haven't tested it but I've read that you can change the APN.

My guess is that with an invalid APN, data won't work, so you won't really send a lot of data. Not the best solution, but it might work? It's just a guess, though.
