International Travel-iphone Question!

i will be traveling to Asia over X'mas and was wondering whether I could somehow put the SIM from my iPhone on to my old Treo and carry that? Or, am I stuck taking the iPhone if I want to use my number?

Also, if I do get stuck taking the iPhone, any way I can disable internet/data and just use it for the phone/wi-fi/ipod aspect of it? I don't or won't need any internet connection over my tel in Asia and don't want to be charged for any data stuff

i was just in china for a few weeks in august - didn't bother bringing over my new iphone since it is locked to at&t - put my sim into my old motorola and it worked fine. just a recommendation, buy a cheap sim card when you get over there = you'll save a fortune vs. using at&t international roaming.

if you want to bring your iphone as just an ipod, just set your iphone to airplane mode and you'll be fine.

You can also call AT&T and have them disable data for your iphone while you are out of the country. In that way your phone functions still work, so if someone really needs to call you in China they can get through, and you to them. The roaming fees in China are high, but at least you can control costs by knowing how much you are actually on the phone.

If you don't disable data get ready for a $100-$200 bill every day. If you do disable data you still have a phone and also "the best ipod Apple's ever made". Nice on the long flights back and forth. When you get back just call and customer service will restore data service to your iphone right away (I called from the plane after landing in Chicago and data was flowing to the phone before we reached the gate).

The best way I've found to call the US from China is set up a skype account. At 2 cents per minute you can talk for hours on $10. Also since it's a 12-13 hour time difference you usually end up talking to America only in the early morning or late evening, so using your laptop to make calls is no big deal.
