Using Safari or Firefox my iMac (Intel) is very slow to open items fully.
Should I go to my provider or will a disk utility help?

Do you have a lot of add on's (tool bars, developer tools etc etc) for the browsers? If so, it might be worth removing some of those.

Also why not try FF4, or Chrome - both are very fast and excellent to use

I did not have a lot of plug-ins open but after running the disk utility and getting the same results I called my provider. Comcast re-set my modem twice and then I had great speed again on the web. Turns out some of my bookmarks had become corrupted. Thanks for the tip on Chrome, I'll check that out.
Thanks for your help.

No worries - what an annoying issue, never would have thought to check that!
