Internet Explorer doesn't play fair!

Hey all,

I am developing this site (http://technology.tom-knight.co.uk) however the template I am using currently works fine in safari and firefox but completly messes up on ie6 (for win), which unfortunaly is the most used browser and therefore the site needs to support it.

Can anyone see why it is doing this? The text seems to get pushed underneath everything else, as if there is not enough room for it.

Hmm, its done in Joomla if that has any effect... any ideas?

Dude, I can't offer much in the way of technical advice, but IE6 is not gonna be around for much longer...

Come Aug 31st, Microsoft is releasing an update, as always, that includes IE7. It is classed as a critical update, and so most PC's will run IE7.

True, but then who else are you targetting, OSX doesn't support IE6 does it? If not then, with all the Windows users on IE7 or whatever, then surely?, and the Mac/Linux users are using something much better...

Yeh I realise ie7 is out soon, however that doesn't really put my mind at rest, it has to work in ie6.

Just a bit of background, alot of the people accessing this will be using Win 2000/NT, probably at least 50% of its visitors, so IE7 is not an option for them.

Also, although IE7 will be released, it is far from likely that everyone will immediately go out and upgrade. IE6 will still be around for a while yet.

I have this problem all the time at the website I work at. You get everything perfect when you use FireFox (like any good net citizen does) but then, one of my coworkers uses Internet Explorer, and it's always messed up for her and she wants me to fix it... I don't really think there is any way to make it perfect in both.

I haven't had time to open your site in virtual pc/ie6 and test it to see the problem but it does sound a lot like a problem I've had with almost every single xhtml/css website i've ever made.

ie6 seems to automatically add padding to divs when you don't want it to and it usually means there isn't enough room for your content and things get pushed around.

There isn't anyway I know of to fix it either :| but if u can chage the style of the section thats getting pushed around and make the width slightly less than it is now it might work! ......it will of course look a little odd in good browsers if you do that but atleast it doesn't look totally mashed in the one crappy browser.

Yes, IE is a horribly bloated piece of software that makes up it's own rules as it goes along.

I worked around it and solved my problemo!

I just get the impression that its like mr.firefox and mr.safari paid attention in css language class and learnt how to interpret it properly, whereas mr.ie was too busy turning up late, pinging the girls bra straps (ms.opera) and not really paying attention to what was going on. SO FRUSTRATING!

It might have something to do with the way that IE6 deals with min-width and max-width. Here is a link to a hack for it. It's quite messy and your CSS won't validate afterwards but it works.

Roll on IE7. It really takes the fun out of making websites, when you have to sit and hack around your beautiful code just to make it work for IE6.

Couldn't agree more. And as much as I hate microsoft for blatently stealing ideas from apple and all that.. well atleast ie7 is going to be more like safari
