Internet help

Hi all i hope this is the right forum, i have tried looking around but i couldnt find what I really needed to know.

I am currently a windows user connected to the internet on ntl broadband, my family an I are about to move to north wales, once the move is done we are going to buy a 14"ibook, been wanting to make the switch for a while and the time has now come, (very excited)

My question concerns the internet, ntl dont reach into the wilds of north wales so i will have to change providers. My first plan was Wanadoo (other family members use it and are very happy) and i notice that they even promote there oyn wireless option. however on further inspection the website says that it does not support mac os x 10.4.

So what is my next step, do i go for another provider BT, F2S, Pipex do these all provide e-mail addresses, and how do i go wireless.

Sorry for the short story, but i could really do with some easy advice.

I'm with BT but they don't support Tiger on the USB voyager modem (that they provide). You can use it on an ethernet connection but I still don't know if it works because I haven't upgraded yet - it should be ok. Demon are very Mac friendly but expensive.

should do but I have no experience and the whole BT and Mac thing seems to be a rollercoaster of maybe's. I use Panther and it works but Tiger is a maybe. Next month I will try it. I just picked up this from another forum I was on "The 205 is an Ethernet router so should work without a problem! I'm using Tiger and BT Broadband with no problems, but I'm using a D-Link modem/router/wireless access point." - so you should be ok.

No idea how to explain it - need one of the many Mac genius types that frequent these forums.

Maybe call your proposed future provider.

If they provide some sort of broadband modem, you should be able to plug that into a wireles router (Linksys WRT54G is good), and then just connect your iBook to that via WiFi.

USB stands for universal serial bus. It is just a standard for connecting devices such as printers, mouse, keyboard, etc, etc. Ethernet is a standard for local area networks.

i use BT and have a adsl modem (ethernet) and connected to a wirelss router (linksys)

Its always on and works fast, even wireless. using it right now on a mini and also has an ibook connected. Running Panther

Get yourself a wireless adsl modem like a Linksys WAG54G or (better) a Netgear DG834GT and chuck the usb modem that most isp's provide in the bin. That way you get round the mac vs pc setup problems, you get wireless and you get 4 ethernet ports to plug in another computer or a little printserver. And you can choose any isp you like more or less.
