Weirdly when i have my ipod for some reason well playing some games online ill get extreme lag and 700ping when my ipod is on and connected to my wifi and when i turn if off it goes back to low 50 or so. I know im dling any thing or updating any thing on my ipod and its only happened since ios 5 so i assume icloud is updating or lagging my internet.

Bandwidth

The exact cause of this is your bandwidth be completely gobbled up by your iPod uploading tons of stuff to your iCloud backup. :) happens to me all the time!

There are so many factors that play into Internet speed, to plant it on iCloud would be premature. iCloud isn't constantly uploading and downloading, especially if you're not changing anything to trigger the sync. Even if photos, for example, we're being uploaded to iCloud while we're playing, that most likely wouldn't have a noticeable effect.

I don't have a definitive solution, but don't listen to brett333

Well believe me or not, I know this is the cause of the problem. If your upload speed of your connection which usually won't exceed 100 kb/s will make your connection suffer for very extended periods. My icloud backup is currently 2GB and uploading that much information at say 100 kb/s it would take up to around 6 hours to complete.

So I guarantee you it is this exact cause to what is raising your latency/ping.
:D

I also forgot to mention, if you allow your photos/videos to sync with icloud they will cause the larger problems, especially video. iPod Touch 4th Gen records 720p video and a 4 minute video translates to ~200-300 mb.

Let me know if you have any questions. Disregard cshearer's post, as they obviously don't have any clue to what they are discussing.:p

This is the likeliest cause.

If you have an advanced router/firewall with QoS (Quality of Service) settings, you might be able to adjust your QoS settings to give iTunes upload a low priority. However, you've got to be pretty knowledgeable about networking to know what to do. (Basically, if you don't already know what QoS is, don't bother.)

When you first activate iCloud it will eat up alot of bandwidth uploading all of your information, app info, contacts, etc. But since everything is already uploaded, the only thing iCould is doing is uploading what has changed ie a contact, app info, email, etc. Those things do not take up alot of bandwidth. Something else is going on with your connection. I wouldnt blame it on iCloud first. I have DSL with iCloud on 5 devices and my bandwidth has not slowed down at all.

Exactly. Just because back up A is 2 gb that doesn't mean every back up everyday is that big the rest are delta backups and very small. The only thing that could cause larger backups is a lot of new photos. Also backups do not run the entire time the device is plugged in has to be locked too, so you wouldn't notice a slow down because you are not using the device when it starts unless you start using the device right after the backup starts. Even then you would notice the speed to improve after the backup finishes so the slow down if caused by backups would be a temporary issue.

Agreed

Marc11 I agree with what you said. For myself, I take quite a bit of videos and my adsl speed is 1.5meg/512 so if icloud backs up my videos when I plug it in its horrifying if im playing online D: lol
