Internet Only Works if Internet Sharing Ticked

Hi,



My 2012 MacBook Air (1.7Ghz Core i7, 8GB memory OSX Sierra 10.12.6),

is having connectivity issues. My WiFi connection is robust and stable (tested on multiple devices including other MacBook Airs).


The only way I can get the internet to work is by turning on Internet Sharing under the Sharing section of System Preferences.

Just for clarity, I can connect to the internet through my device, but only if the internet sharing check box under System Preferences/Sharing is ticked!

I wouldn't mind just leaving it on, however, at my university (which is protected with 802.1X) I cannot connect to the internet as Internet Sharing is not allowed on the network. To clarify, I can connect to this enterprise network, I just can't access the internet as Internet sharing is unticked)

I have tried the following:

  • Restarting the computer
  • Resetting the router
  • Deleting and readding Wifi as a network interface
  • Changing the WiFi location
  • Deleting preference plist files (specified by various articles)
  • Running diagnostics tests
  • Renewing DHCP
  • Changing the location
  • Changing MTU to 1453
  • Resetting the PRAM
  • Resetting the SMC

Google Chrome has given me the following error messages (when internet sharing is unticked and a network has been connected to):
  1. There is no Internet Connection
  2. DNS Address could not be found
I also tried looking up what system settings Internet Sharing changes but can't seem to find anything which can help me (without knowing the .plist syntax - apparently the attached file is used)

I sounds like maybe you have something installed on the computer that maybe causing your issue. Run EtrCheck and post the results.
