Ok, my MBP came today and I'm trying to set up the internet connection and I really have no idea what I'm doing. I wrote down all the information I could find from my old PC which ran on the same cable modem I'm trying to use for the MBP (i.e., ip address, DHCP address and servers, DNS servers, subnet mask, etc.) but I haven't been able to find a DHCP ID, which is what the Mac mostly asks for. If anyone can help me with this it'd be hugely appreciated, there's nothing more frustrating for me than trying and failing to set up my brand new stuff. thanks in advance for any pointers you can give, and sorry for being so completely useless when it comes to computers.

Are you plugging the cable modem directly into the MacBook Pro with an ethernet cable? If so, it should just work unless the cable modem is tied to one MAC address (nothing to do with Macs in general, it's a networking term). If that's the case, you might need to call your cable internet provider and tell them you have a new computer so they can reset the modem.
If your ISP requires specific setup, look to their tech support to find out what settings you need. However, you shouldn't really need to do anything, just plug it in and go. If you're connecting directly to the modem, you might need to unplug your MBP and power cycle the modem, then plug it back in.
FYI why would you write down the DHCP address? Unless you need to configure it manually, the point to it is that it's dynamic. Your modem/router should assign one to your Mac.

yeah ok i finally got it working, called the cable people and whatnot, not sure what they did but i'm online so i'm happy. now that i'm on my first mac, are there any important programs i should be downloading? and i don't need virus protection or spyware stuff, right?
