I was messing around with my psp "network Settings" even tho I don't have a wireless network!! In the past I've noticed that the SSID that were visible all had WEP!! except last night there was one called partyhaus with no security!!

I managed to download latest software update and browse the internet!!!

Anyway, I can also surf the net using my iMac! is this safe for me to do?

your stealing on someones wireless connection, so its not illegal, they may get mad and put a password on it but probably not so your stoked, free internet!! and like it says above use your firewall and disable any sharing between comps on a LAN or a network

Safe in terms of your machines yes, just keep the firewall on and keep sharing to a minimum.

Legal? Possibly not.

So let me get this straight, you have found a neighbor's unsecured network, and after downloading a boatload of software update material, you're asking if its safe?

Using their bandwidth without permission is rude, about the same as walking into someones house and using the telephone and the toilet just because when you tested the doorknobs up and down your block, you found one that wasn't locked.

But think of this. What if partyhaus is a wireless hot spot intentionally left open, and has a sniffer on the traffic. I would be not logging into Paypal, or email, or my bank or creditcard sites, or using any online passwords at all here...

Safe? Who can bloody tell? Safe is not using it. Polite is also not using it.

I wouldn't use it. Like the others have said, it isn't polite and it definitely isn't safe. As much fun as free internet can be, it's always better when you set up your own wireless network instead of taking advantage of a neighbor.

I'll only steal my neighbor's wi-fi if I was desperate and needed my fix, or else I go mad.

Otherwise, it's me handing out the free wi-fi. I really should clamp down on my generosity.

I wouldn't exactly call 7MB a "boatload" which was uploaded to my sony psp automatically... so what was I to do! Oh and when I said browse the internet! it wasn't like I was download GB's of porn!!! just the psp home page!!!

I have a fast broadband connection! so don't need to use nor have I used it on my iMac! and after what you said about sniffer thing!! won't!!! "well maybe If I get cut off or summit :) "
