Intuos4 VS 2010 Cintiq

Hey there,

I bought my girlfriend a Intuos4 for Christmas and was amazed by it, as was she. I recently attended Adobe Roadshow and was able to test drive the new 2010 Cintiq 21UX.

I wanted to get some opinions on which one is better, obviously there's the huge price difference but I wanted to know what you guys and gals on here think.

There are only two real differences between the two:

1.) price
2.) if you like to directly see, what you draw, get the Cintiq (and you can hold it as a real drawing board)

That is all. Nothing more.

The main difference is going to speed. With a Cintiq you can see lines happening as you draw them, and just like drawing on real paper, it is more immediate. I find when using a tablet, I can never get my lines 100% right first time, whereas with pen and paper I can just do it straight away. It's not practice cause I've had a tablet for 2 years, but there is always going to be that degree of seperation.

In terms of specifications, the Intuos4 and the latest Cintiq have the exact same pen, however the surface of the Intuos4 has a unique vinyl like feel which has been said to eat nibs for breakfast.

If I was able to try a Cintiq, I would be able to give a more definitive opinion, but it seems to me that for graphic designers and illustrators the intuos4 would be fine for most scenarios. For concept artists, storyboard artists, and professional illustrators, the Cintiq is an investment that would really pay off in the long run, and one that I would only really consider if I was using it to make a living.

Like bigglefuzz mentioned, the intended use is important. for someone who is going to be drawing/illustrating etc. the cintiq is far superior, budget permitting.
However when it comes to something like photo retouching, I personally prefer the Intuos. It's much easier to see what you're doing without worrying about your hand being in the way of your work.

The cintiq will offer limited work space while the intuos lets you work on a 24" monitor. I will take resolution over being able to see the cursor on a tiny screen, but Ive been using a tablet for 10 years and am just as comfortable with it as I am with a piece of paper so I gain no benefit from seeing the cursor at the end of the pen. Screen real estate in Photoshop and god forbid the pixel hog Painter is really valuable.

I would rather get a tablet PC than a Cintiq since they arent much different in price

There is no limitation to what you can do with the Wacom Cintiq.
