Hey folks,

I wanted to put out this situation for your thoughts. I have an old MacBook Pro 2017 (retina display with no touch bar). It has screen issues with ghosting and it turns off intermittently and then it does not turn back on even when charged and only after a period of time it of charging it allows me to turn on (this is when the computer is already charged to 100%).

In order to fix the computer with apple it is around $650, my other option is using a third party repairer to fix the screen with a second hand replacement screen which will cost around $350 (I didn't mention to the repairer the issue of the compute intermittently shutting down because it started after I spoke with him).

The other option I have is to trade it in with apple for anther laptop with a trade in value of $150.

So what do you folks think

1) fix the existing computer which will cost me at least $350
2) buy the MacBook Air 2020 or maybe a new MacBook Air will be released this year
3) wait until the release of the new MacBook Pro in October

I do not use my computer for anything heavy just internet, netflix, Ms Word but I would like to get into photoshop but only lightly, I do not use the computer for any professional photo or video editing. the MacBook pro sounds like its going to be an amazing machine, but I understand that it is not really worth the expense for my uses. Also I think that the next release of the MacBook Air will be amazing as well however, I am not sure if it will be this year or next...

anyway folks, what do you think, fix existing computer, buy a MacBook Air now or wait for the release of the new MacBook Pro or possibly the new MacBook Air?

Your ideas / thought / comments are and have always been appreciated!

I'd go with an Apple Refurb 2020 MBA for $849. Put the $150 trade-in toward that and it's only $700 plus tax. If you're doing the trade-in with Apple, try to do it at the store instead of mailing it in.

Thanks for the reply. I just learned that I can get education pricing because I am a student so I might go ahead with a new MacBook Air because I do not need a Pro. However, I think that any new release of the MacBook Air would be amazing but I am not sure if it will be this year or next.

I would get the current M1 MBA, Gen 2 Apple Silicon MBA's are not expected until 2022, Probably around March / April.

Gen 2 14" MBP are expected to be announced in the next two months, but I expect them to be priced above the current M1 13" MBP, due to more cores, more port capability and larger screens.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a single dime on any Butterfly keyboard-equipped Mac. Sooner or later that keyboard is going to die, and if it's out of Apple's four year keyboard replacement program it will be unecomonical to repair.

The M1 MacBook Air is such a vast improvement over your 2017 MacBook Pro, it's not even funny. For your stated use cases, there's no real reason to wait for the M1X 14" or 16" models, unless you really want the larger display.

Thank you all for your replies, I found it helpful to make my choice so I will go out and buy the new 2020 M1 MacBook Air with a student discount. I am sure that it will be a great purchase.

Just to follow up, I ended up getting the MacBook Air and I’m very happy. Fantastic machine, very quiet (no fan) and suits my purposes. Thanks for your comments!

I didn't realize how much the fan is a pain in the ass until I didn't have one.. Congratulations
