Invitation to Interview w/ Apple

Hey there folks,

I'm a long time crawler of the MacRumors forums, but I never really got around to becoming an active member, so why not start now?

Anyway, there are quite a few other threads asking the same overall question, but I never really seen a straight answer and those threads are rather old. I recently got an email from an Apple Recruiter inviting me to an Apple Hiring Seminar at a local hotel nearby. So I have a few basic questions about this: what can I expect?, what should I wear that is "business casual"?

Also, I'm only 16 years of age. I applied for these positions a little over a month ago. I clearly stated in my cover letter that I'm only sixteen years old and to not put me through the interview process if it is a written rule to not have anyone under 18. Something like this only gets me excited but will make me very angry if I don't get the job as working at Apple is my dream job. It also clearly states in my resume that I am a Junior in High School. Could it be that they're making an exception?

I do have previous inside sales experience, but very little outside. I started my working career when I was 15 with my first job working for an INC500 company from my own room. I now work at a datacenter facility (at 16 years of age) supporting servers with a variety of tiered clients.

My interview is coming up, but I will not disclose the date, time, location, et cetera so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Apple usually starts hiring at 18, but if you have excellence experience (which by reading your info you do) and you can easily time manage school and a job (Junior year? Don't mess up or you're screwed) they make exceptions. Technically they do start hiring for retail at 16.

Yep, Junior year. I have been working at my present job as a tech support agent now for a year and 2 months with about a six month overlap with my junior year. I've been managing my time quite well during this time to be honest.

Also, you know for a fact that they make exceptions? Have you seen it happen before?

I know *one* person who is 17, but was 16 when hired as a Mac specialist at our local one.

Wait, but I thought Apple requires a background check. Can I get a background check at my age or is it simply overlooked?

So I went to the first interview and it was absolutely fun and exciting! I definitely stood out considering the fact that I was the youngest person there. Today I got an email requesting a background check. I filled that out and now I'm just waiting to hear back. Is this a good sign!?

As long as they don't find out about the stretch you did in Leavenworth for bank robbery, you're OK.

I would say so. Background checks aren't free, so they wouldn't do it on anyone that wouldn't be considered an ideal candidate. It's hard to know for sure with all the jobs I didn't get over the years, but the only ones I'm aware of doing a background check on me were the jobs I ended up getting and were at the end of the process.

Yeah I realized they weren't exactly free, in fact they're rather expensive, but from what I read online the background check is usually towards the end, but that contradicts itself when others are saying there are usually 4 interviews within the whole process. I can't imagine they wouldn't do the background check if they weren't at least the slightest bit interested in me. I guess only time will tell.

The fact that they are taking up a background check indicates that they were impressed enough by your interview to consider you a candidate for the job.

I'd say you stand a very good chance of becoming an Apple employee soon.

This is sounding better and better. They said in the first interview that I will hear from them tomorrow, Thursday the latest. I'll be sure to update you guys on my progress.

Wow, I totally forgot about this. So at the time I didn't get the job. They were about to give it to me (gave me the contract and all) until I finally told them I was only 16.

However, my birthday just passed (now 17), and Carolyn (my area recruiter) called me back the day of to ask me to come in and "finish where we left off". I hope they didn't miscalculate...again, only to find that I'm still under 18.

Just had my second interview and am scheduled for my third for Thursday of next week. They also told me to reserve some dates for their "Core Training". Things are looking all too good!

Just don't give them your user id here, because of your opening statement:

"Something like this only gets me excited but will make me very angry if I don't get the job as working at Apple is my dream job."

Some people would have reservations about hiring anyone who writes about flipping between joy and anger that easily.

So I heard back from someone at my store today and they want me to come into a final interview "and briefing" with their Market Leader. She says that this is the final interview and I did excellent on my previous interviews. Looks like I got the job!
