Iomega Ext hard drive not writable

Have a new 1.5 TB Iomega ext hard drive I have never used. When I plug it into Macbook pro it is read only. I have looked in all places and researched and not able to make writable. Am using 1 TB drive for Time Machine that works fine. I have another 1 TB drive that is also read only and can't change it either.
