b4 I waste more time on this, is email possible with an iphone 5c ios 10.3.3?
I noted I last rcv emails in Oct 2021 so been playing with it for 1/2 hr, no luck.
Reentering p/w & finally deleting accounts.
When I try & add yahoo it just goes back to the add account screen. with google I get error
msg: 'access blocked ios's request is invalid'

It's still possible, just not with the Apple email app. Use the Gmail and Yahoo Mail apps. FWIW, Yahoo doesn't add as an account in iOS 12 either (I have a 6 Plus using iOS 12).

Those apps won’t be compatible with your iOS. You’ll need iOS 14 or higher for Yahoo Mail and iOS 15 or higher for Gmail.

Huh?

I have an iPhone 5 on iOS 10. Downloading Yahoo Mail and the Gmail apps right now. App store asks if you want to download the last compatible version.

Also, I have both on my 6 Plus running iOS 12.

Not sure where you're getting this info.

I'll be fair and say that the older Gmail app won't allow you to add a Gmail account because the app is old, but you can add other accounts and the Gmail app is downloadable for iOS 10.

I’m getting the information directly from the App Store.

Right. That is what it will say. But if you attempt to download using an older version of iOS you will be presented with the option to download the last compatible version for the older iOS.

I think this is the reason why people overestimate the issues that arise with running older versions of iOS. They see the latest versions’ iOS requirements on the App Store and they quickly reach the conclusion that nothing works, when the opposite is true: the vast majority of popular apps on the App Store support older versions, and work perfectly.

You might be on to something there.

I’ve never encountered having to use an older version from the App Store so that’s good information to know however, the developers don’t always allow for downloading of older versions. I know that Netflix has removed older versions. Thanks for sharing!

Netflix allows very old iOS versions to run compatible versions of the app. I tested it on iOS 10 and it works perfectly.

@joeblack007 does have a point. I have encountered some apps that did not have an old version. Generally those seem to be apps that were made in more recent years or less popular apps.

But for the more major or popular apps that have been around awhile you can generally get a download.

That’s the issue: apps introduced into the App Store after the target iOS version don’t have compatible version and therefore cannot be installed.

This is an aspect which may or may not impact the user, depending on their usage pattern. If the user constantly installs new apps, staying behind often becomes untenable. If the user has their set of apps which doesn’t change much, staying behind is very easy. There’s no right answer for this. My iPhone Xʀ runs iOS 12, I have a stable set of apps, and the benefits of iOS 12 far outweigh my own compatibility issues. Others may find iOS 12 today untenable. Neither of these approaches is wrong, it just depends on usage patterns.

I don’t understand what you mean by the Yahoo issue, but as far as Gmail goes, do you have the app as purchased? Do you have the cloud icon? (i.e., have you ever downloaded it with your Apple ID before?)

I don't recall buying any email apps.
they're free on computer, you now have to buy them for iphone?
I know I used to get a lot of emails on iphone but haven't used it in a while.
I do backups to icloud, so I have it.
I see gmail under free in app store but sez I need os15
If I go to yahoo mail in app store it gives me option to open, not install. If I open, I see current emails, up to date

I get it now. You need to use your Apple ID to login and download the Gmail app on a compatible device with iOS 15 and afterwards it will let you download an older version of the app. If you can’t access a device with iOS 15 there’s nothing you can do.

I'm getting a model 14 so I'll try that.
Am still puzzled by a couple things:
why do I have to go to app store to read my yahoo emails?
Why am I not presented with option to load older version?
When I go to mail icon all I see now is icloud (I set up icloud mail when nothing else worked).
Originally there was a list of clients to choose from: yahoo, gmail, etc.
