Since I "upgraded" to iOS 10 about 4 months ago, I have needed to press the URL bar much longer and harder to get urls to highlight and then I have had to press the backspace key much harder to get stuff to delete. This is not only a great annoyance that slows my workflow down. After 4 months of pounding on the screen in this way the keypad has broken - its no longer reliably responsive. So my 17 month old iPhone 6S Plus is now unusable and worthless. I also have an iPad Pro 12" with iOS 9.2.1 and you can be sure I am NOT going to ruin it by "upgrading" to iOS 10.x.

Looks like a certain area of your screen is defective.
Ask for repair or replacement.

  1. Remove all screen protectors and try again
  2. Try downloading a drawing application to check on the screen responsiveness
  3. Contact Apple Support for help
  4. Factory reset and try again

If you're pressing harder, that's more than likely why. Safari probably thinks your trying to 3D touch.

I was unaware until now that software keys could deteriorate..

Depending on whether it's just the keyboard that is proving difficult it sounds like a hardware defect and may be worth a trip to the AStore!
