hi

question about how iMessages are handled across the two new updates to the operating systems.

in iOS 9 and OS X 10.11, iMessages seemed to be working differently: when you delete an iMessage thread in iOS 9, the next time that you wrote a new iMessage to that same address, the old messages would appear again in the new iMessage thread (so they weren't actually deleted).

but in OX 10.11 (and previously as well), it seemed on my system that after deleting an iMessage thread the old messages would NOT re-appear when a later iMessage thread was started with the same addressee (actually deleted?)

in iOS 10 beta and OS X Sierra beta, how does this work?

thanks.

I'm not *quite* sure what you're saying.

For me in iOS 9 and iOS 10, as well as OS X 10.11 and macOS 10.12, if I delete a thread, it's completely deleted.

That actually happens to me in El Cap. Delete a thread. if i get a message from the same user, the old messages pop up. Not sure on the phone but it doesnt do that on the iPad.

It depends on if you have delete conversation when thread is closed selected. I have preservation on: When I close out a message on El Cap it is just closed and sending another will reopen the thread right where I left it. If I delete the thread, it is deleted and no matter if i send a message later or not the old conversation string doesn’t come up. Closing and deleting are two exclusive options when the "save conversation history" box is checked, but they are one in the same when it is left unchecked.

hi, many thanks for your info.
i do have the "Save History When Conversations Are Closed" checked in El Capitan Messages.
In the actual Messages panel, as i understand what you are saying, if you highlight the thread in the left side pane, and use Delete, it will delete the thread. if you merely just click the thread's X mark when the thread is highlighted, it will retain the messages and just close the thread until messages are sent again to that same address.

thanks!

so, now for the new betas, is it working differently, and is there any to backup messages so that you can be sure you don't lose them?
