I think maybe this has actually been there since iOS 8, not sure-but I'm getting a question from a relative, and I realized I don't know what it means.

On the lock screen-the first screen, not the screen you get when you swipe to your "widgets"...it'll show the time, and at the bottom left it sometimes shows a program icon. In her case, it's showing Maps, and...I don't know why. She thinks it's running and running down her battery. I can't find ANY info about why programs show up there and what it means.
 
Okay, so it doesn't mean it's necessarily running or anything? Nothing to worry about?

Just a suggestion to make it easier to launch something that you might usually use at that time/place. You can disable those if you want.
