iOS 10 + old Mac = problem

Apple pushed the iOS 10 update to my family member's iPhone 5. The update went OK. The phone works great. But the iPhone does not communicate with her MacBook any more.

The Macbook is an early-2008. Yes, it is old, but it is clean and has got a new SSD and a new life. She is happy with the computer and would not like to invest in a new computer simply because of a decision that Apple has made when releasing iOS 10.

When she connects her iPhone to the MacBook using USB, her iTunes says that it could not connect to the iPhone "XYZ" because an invalid response was received from the device. WiFi sync is not available either (And iPhoto says that the iPhone is locked, even if it is not.)

Is there any official solution or hack that solves the compatibility problem? iMazing would probably be a workaround, but it is not exactly cheap.

How can she get an iOS device to communicate with the iTunes 12.2.2.25? In Windows world, I would probably need a driver, but what could be the solution be in Apple world?

Or how can she install a newer iTunes on the OS X Lion 10.7.5 computer? Other than by doing a hack OS X install? Apple has already earlier decided that her early 2008 does not deserve OS X updates.

Tricky. Apple really try hard to get people update their hardware.

You could use Apple iCloud services for Photos, Music, etc., so you would not need a computer at all, but this might imply subscription to a music streaming service (Spotify or Apple Music) and an iCloud photo storage solution (iCloud Photo Library or Google Photos, the latter of which is free and unlimited).

Also, if you have a copy of compatible Windows installation media around, you could try using it with Oracle's Virtual Box (free): https://www.virtualbox.org/

Finally, you could buy a cheapest PC around for about 250$, provided it can run Windows 10 and pair it with it?

You can install Mountain Lion on it. Look up MacPostFactor; the MacBook will be appreciably faster after the upgrade.

Computers aren't generally upgraded every two years, and at £1000 and upwards with no subsidy from retailers unlike phones, they shouldn't be. Apple can lock out their hardware from updates as much as they like but eventually they'll have to realise that computers and mobile devices are culturally different beasts. I've got a laptop here that's stuck on El Cap from now on but I won't be upgrading it until it dies. They seem to think all Mac users have bottomless pockets.

If she wants access to her music she can use Google Play to upload her music to the cloud and then download it back to the phone through the Google Play phone app. Photos on the phone will need to go into the cloud, to backup. Which iMac? If it can run Lion it can most probably run Mountain Lion through MacPostFactor...

IIRC 2008 Macbooks can run 2015's El Capitan. I know this can be a pain but Apple is generally doing a pretty good job of keeping old hardware afloat. It's probably not too audacious from them to require hardware that's newer than 8 years. Keeping everything backwards compatible for decades is why Windows PCs suck more than Macs.

If this is a late 2008 Aluminum Macbook, then it is supported by El capitan.
Second solution is to go iCloud. If she has a lot of data to backup, iCloud is only 99c per month for 50GB cloud storage.
If she needs more than 50GB to backup her photos, Flickr offers 1TB for free.
For music, there are a lot of third party syncing options nowadays. One mentioned Google Music. Sure it's not as seamless, but it's not that difficult.
Another option is to install Windows using a VM (virtualbox is free). The only cost here is the license cost of Windows (better than buying another Windows laptop). With a VM, she doesn't have to leave OS X environment.

Well, you could try using a service like Google Photos or the Photobucket app to get them off your phone. Then it's a simple matter of downloading them to your computer via your browser. That's what I have been doing on mine. It'll do till you get a new system. That's what those of us with older machines are having to do.

No chance to get my photos on my MacBook. I have tried for hours.

I even called Apple support. They basically told me that

It's absolutely ridiculous that Apple does this. Have you tried iMazing? https://imazing.com/features/iphone-photos-transfer

There are several similar apps that claim to do the same type of thing that you can try if this one doesn't work.

When I was in a similar situation with an old MBP, I ended up shifting virtually everything to Dropbox, since it's system agnostic and easy to back up all my photos (and plenty of other data) to it, then pull only what I need down to my laptop. Even now that I have a newer Mac, I've continued doing that just because I don't want to end up in the same situation again.

Alas, there is a bug in iOS 10 that doesn't allow any phone running iOS 10 to 'trust' a laptop not running the latest iTunes version. (iOS 9 worked fine)

Did you try the MacPostFactor suggestion? I have that MacBook- even fully upgraded, it's barely usable. It's unreasonable to expect that Apple will keep supporting a Mac that old forever. And really, how have they "let you down?" It's provided 8 years of service. A new Mac will probably give you an even longer usable lifespan. I can confirm that running MacPostFactor and upgrading to OS X 10.8.5 will allow you to read pictures off of an iOS 10 device.

Another solution would be to install bootcamp and use iTunes from windows but this is a horrible solution since who uses iTunes on windows anyway.

Also have macbook pro stuck on 10.7.5 but have a macbook pro that El Cap.

You could hack past what you are running depending on GPU as some are not supported past 10.7.5

My fiancee macbook pro is stuck on 10.7.5 and she gave it me and "stole" my asus transformer convertible as it has windows 10. She can now talk to her iphone SE but she wants another apple laptop as phone companion does not work and phone does not show up in my computer so unable to get photos off phone in windows 10 natively.

She uses syncios for photos.
This will work in mac too but 10.9 and up

It's worth noting that any Mac which runs Lion can run Mountain Lion with MacPostFactor- so, at least, it becomes a little more usable.

Supports the 2006 MacBook Pro (which is what you have). The graphics drivers work because ML DP1 shipped with a 32 bit kernel- the drivers that MacPostFactor uses are the same 32bit drivers from Lion.
