iOS 10 on the iPhone 5: Amazing

I'm amazed at how well iOS 10 runs on my iPhone 5; smooth sailing across the board and the only feature I found to be missing was being able to stay in an iMessage thread when using quick reply (on the iPhone 5, it just has a pull down, enter text, and hit send kind of interface). Apart from that, I'm just amazed at how well it runs and how smooth everything is!

This is great to hear. iOS 8 and iOS 9 on iPhone 4S was absolutely terrible! I wonder if it has something to do with the 1GB RAM on iPhone 5 that makes the performance good. (512 MB RAM was available on iPhone 4S.)

Putting it next to another iPhone 5 running the most up to date iOS 9; some of the animations such as control centre are slightly less smooth but still silky on iOS 10. App opening is so much more responsive on iOS 10 though, and if you press the home button after opening an app you don't need to wait for the animation to finish on iOS 10, which makes the entire OS feel more responsive over iOS 9. I'd call it an upgrade speed wise due to this.

Yeah iPhone 5 is doing well with iOS 10. I have one in the house I mess with for betas and as a spare device. Some animations with lots of translucency are juddery, such as tapping the search bar on the lock screen widget area and sometimes doing the quick spotlight thing when inside an app can be kinda slow but it's overall still pretty dang usable still. App closing time (home button delay, or lack there of) beats my iPhone 6 on 9.3.3. However the iPhone 5 seems a little slower with the delay after tapping apps for the first time. Folders always hesitate a little. The quick animations we have now help make up for it though!

Yup. I have an iPhone 5 as my backup iPhone, and it runs iOS10 fairly well considering its age. It's too bad if Apple ditch it on iOS11. Unlike the A4/A5, which were gasping for air on their last supported iOS, the A6 is holding up fairly well, other than being 32bit.
Of course, imo that 1GB of RAM helped as well.

There really isn't a way to turn off iOS updates. You can sort of trick it into not checking and downloading them, but that's about it.

I am not sure slow opening apps is due to iOS.
Apps are getting heavier after each update, are loading more and more data and it takesmore time on every iPhone.

Any iPhone/iPad that it's not 64 bit will be dropped. That's the OS minimum requirement this year
