So I got the notification to upgrade to iOS 11.1.2 and did so without any reservations. I am on the iPhone 6+ and it has been flawless since day one except for a drop which resulted in a shattered screen about 2 months ago. I took it in to Apple Store and paid $150 for the repair and they replaced the entire screen.

After the update to iOS 11.1.2 my phone immediately started acting weird. When I pressed the "HOME" button it would show a black screen with some lighting differences across the screen. I could tell it was responding to my "HOME" button press though. So instead I pressed the "LOCK" button and the screen appeared as normal. This happened about 4-5 times before it went to a completely black screen and nothing would work to activate it, or so I thought.

I tried to do a various number of things to get it started again but nothing seemed to work. I decided to attach the phone to my computer and fire up iTunes and see if it detected the phone. The computer immediately dinged and iTunes indicated that the phone was connected but that it was locked and I had to enter my passcode on it. Because I could not see the screen I decided to place the phone into recovery mode by holding the buttons iTunes saw it. I then initiated a restore of the phone using iTunes, which it completed but nothing changed, still can not see screen.

I decided to do this again but install an older version of iOS and see if it resolved the problem. After 4 attempts I finally got a screen back on the phone but it looked strange. The phone was restored as a new device and wanting me to walk through the setup which I was glad to do. The problem was that the icons where VERY tiny on the screen and the keyboard was shifted to the right and half was off the screen. Things were very strange. I was able to get the keyboard back on screen by hitting the "ENTER" button and then walk through the setup.

Once I was at the home screen, things were very strange. All my HOME screen icons were tiny.

I soon found that after opening a few apps, I was unable to close them in the normal fashion of just swiping them up off the screen. They would simply bounce back down into place. Instead I had to hold my finger on each app and a minus symbol would appear on the upper left of each open app and I could touch it and they would they fly up and away. Very strange indeed.

I decided to try another restore and see if I could resolve this. After another restore, my icons were back to normal and my screen was working fine. Again this was restored as a new device and appeared to be resolved.

But I decided to try and restore all my settings and apps by doing another run through iTunes and this time use a iCloud backup to restore the phone. Everything went fine until the phone began to restart and then immediately went back to a black screen. I'm back at square one.

I have tried several restores at this point with no luck. iTunes sees the phone but I see nothing on the screen. If I call the phone it rings. If I send a text to it, it rings. But no screen.

I have an appointment at the Genius Bar on Saturday at 6pm but wanted to make this post so that if others were having similar issues it could be seen and maybe tracked.

I have owned every iPhone since day one and have never had ANY software related issues. I am wondering if my phone is getting long in the tooth and I need to upgrade. Did I maybe get a bum software update that really screwed my phone up? I wont know more until I get it in to Apple and have them look at it.

I'll update the post once I finish up at Apple on Saturday.

So here is the follow up....

When to the Apple Store last night and they attempted several things to resolve the issue on my iPhone 6+ but in the end could not get it to work. Even after a display replacement (with known working display), the phone continued to not display anything.

They had my phone for 3.5 hours before finally just giving me a replacement...a shiny new iPhone 6s+ upgrade.

I was completely surprised by the upgrade, was at least expecting a replacement if mine did not work but not an upgrade.

Once again, Apple shows me why I remain a customer for life.
