i have always had the gif search in the app drawer disabled. Today I toggled it on and the messages app in iOS beta 11.1 b2 crashed.

I restarted and it still crashes on launch. and couldn’t get it to get back into the app to go into the app drawer and reset it to off for the gif toggle

Any ideas or suggestions as a work around?

Reboot

iPhone 6s/6s+ or older = press and hold Power Button + Home Button until you see an Apple logo

iPhone 7/7+ = press and hold Power Button + Volume Down until you see an Apple logo

iPhone 8/8+ = press Volume Up, then press Volume Down, then press and hold the Power Button until you see the Apple logo

Haha if a simple reboot would fix it I wouldn’t be posting here. ;-)

Was just a general troubleshoot suggestion. You’d be surprised how many questions on here get resolved by a reboot, that the OP never tried attempting.

Trying to figure out a safe mode to boot into but apparently Apple has taken that away from us too? Apple these days.... a messs. Used to be able to just go into safe mode and go into messages and u toggle the gif enablement on the app drawer but all I can see is there’s no true safe mode anymore. Dunno what to do without starting from scratch. If I remove the beta profile and install the iOS 11.0.3 manually will it restore to 11.0.3 on top of my 11.1 b2 without losing all my crap or no?

What safe mode? iOS has never had a safe mode that I’m aware of. At least not outside of jailbreaking.

Guess last time I needed it was the days of jail breaking. Bummer. Every day that goes by I’m more and more inclined to just say screw it and go Android. :-(. This really sucks that there’s not a way to disable gif search outside of the actual iMessage app. No it doesn’t suck, it’s disgusting.
[doublepost=1508125134][/doublepost]Is there any way I can just remove the beta profile and install iOS 11 stock over 11.1 b2 in hopes of fixing it? Or install iOS 11.1 b1 in hopes of kicking the setting back? I didn’t back up before going from 11.0 to 11.1 so looking for any suggestion here.

If the old method from iOS 9-10 days still works, maybe.

- Remove the beta profile
- download the 11.0.3 ipsw
- open iTunes on your computer and connect your phone
- option key + click on update (not sure the Windows sequence of keys)
- select the 11.0.3 ipsw file

It should install 11.0.3 over the 11.1 install. It used to preserve all data and everything. I cannot say with 100% certainty that it still does or even if this method works anymore (haven’t had to do it since very early iOS 9 betas)

I did this and it worked like a charm. Traveling presently so I was SUPER scared it'd result in a wipe and loss of all the photos that hadn't sunk... but all is well and messages working again. I disabled the gif feature in case i decide to try iOS 11.1 again on my primary device, LOL

Word to the wise... if you install iOS 11.1 b2 on a iPhone 7 Plus, don't go into message apps and toggle GIF search on\off, or it'll brick the device's iMessage app. LOL

Glad it overall did the trick. Sucks about the photos. Hopefully you have a backup of them somewhere?

For the record. After reading your post and responding initially. I tested on my 7+. I already had the gifs enabled. Toggled off. Toggled back on. No issues. So saying “will” brick your messages app is a little misleading. “It’s possible” would be more accurate. Your issue was probably a fairly isolated problem (small chance)

Oh no loss of photos, all is identical to before the app crashed. :)

You're right, it's something specific to my config. Wondering if toggling it on for me, since it then displays a history, something about one of the gifs in my history or a search is causing a memory issue and thus causing the app to crash out to springboard. I tried another device, and it didn't have the issue, so something specific ... but I'd avoid the toggle like the plague, but then again it's quite simple to revert without any loss (other than 20 mins of time) following your directions.

Aaaaand the issue is back... updated to 11.1.1 today and once again Messages is crashing on launch. I tried manually doing an install to 11.1 and then updating, no avail... the only thing that brings back functional iMessage is to downgrade to 11.0.1 and leave it.. any version I update to breaks it... not sure what to do at this point. This is about all I can take of silly Apple these days.

Having the same problems with 11.1.1 ! Grrr...
Maybe I should try the beta?

Yeah it's a bit nuts. I finally tried manually installing the IPSW over it for 11.1 and then it resolved it. Then I just updated to 11.1.2 and the issue still is gone, so so far so good. Doesn't speak well for apple though. Sad.

I finally got it work with the beta. But this kind of thing from Apple just seems more like the norm. TOO MANY BUGS.

I agree 100% ... I used to always use my laptop on the Beta program... but now it's so buggy that I've had to restore for various issues even late in the beta cycles. Nice having early access to new features, but Apple seems to miss even the most obvious bugs. Not sure how their development teams are setup, but it's almost as if they have people working in glass boxes that don't communicate between groups. It's bizarre.
