iPhone iOS 11.3 kills the touch functionality on iPhone 8s with after market screen

Apple has striked again with software update kills phone with third party repairs. First was Error 53 bricking peoples phone after third party screen replacement, then software update killed the iPhone 7’s touch functionality, then Apple decided to kill iPhone 8s with after market screen with iOS 11.3 updates.

I understand that Apple want people fix their problem with Apple through official channel and they want get the revenue from these repairs. But my problem is that third party repairs more often is the only option for people. Take for example: I went to McMaster University located in Hamilton, Ontario. The only Apple Store near Hamilton is 1 hour bus ride (I was student back then) or 20 minutes drive through highway 403. Take other example: I was born in Taiyuan City in China. There is no official Apple Store at all, the only Apple Store near my city is 3 hour train ride to Beijing. It is not possible to go that route and if I have problem with iPhone, i would have to find a local repair store. This irritates me when manufacture can simplest kills core functionality of a product with simple software updates.

Hopefully, like last year, Apple release other update for people who are affected.

Apple would rather have you spend your money to buy a brand new device, than try to repair it. There is a reason why they try to rebuff people wanting repairs, even if they want to pay for it themselves.

No. For years, people changing new screen without issues. Somehow, this is exception when it comes to Apple devices. I can have my Android phone screen changed by third party reseller without issue.

Seems to me Apple is intentionally creating issue for people who attempted to do repairs from third party sources.

How can they give up the nice profit margin from overpriced repairs? Apple want charges me 300 dollars for iPad 4 digitizer replacement. No. I went to other places for front digitizer replacment.

So...one theory is they avoid repairs to make people buy new phones and make more money that way...and the other is that they encourage repairs so that they can make more money that way. Makes total sense.

Yes. Apple can encourage one set user buy new devices. For example, Apple can charge hefty fees for old devices repair. For example, Apple charges 300 for iPad 4 repairs where they just get people buy new iPad. For people rocking iPhone 7, iPhone 8 or new devices, Apple can charge hefty fee as well. Because it makes sense for people do repair other than just buying new iPhone 8.

Why limit to iPhone 8 models then? Just kill all models, much better, right?

Secondly, if this was intentional and never fixed in a SW update, how many of the affected would buy an iPhone anymore? Exactly, not many.

Thirdly, repair revenue (and profit) is a drop in the ocean for Apple. They don’t need to pull these kind of tricks, especially since it will not drive *future revenue* and customer satisfaction.

It’s just an unfortunate bug.
