New features
- Combined the Lock Screen and Notification Center into one concept. New notifications are displayed on the Lock Screen by default, and swiping up from the middle of the screen invokes a conver sheet showing all older notifications. Swiping down from the top of the screen invokes a view identical to the Lock Screen with the exact same functionality, but does not lock the device.
- New unlocking animation: The lock screen slides up to reveal the home screen.
- Person to person payments and Apple Pay Cash are available only in the U.S. on iPhone SE, iPhone 6 or later, iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation), iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 or later, and Apple Watch (not working in beta 1).
- Flick Keyboard on iPad can be used to enter secondary characters by swiping down on a key.
- Automatic Setup. Just hold your new iPhone or iPad near an iOS device or Mac you already own, and many of your personal settings, preferences, and iCloud Keychain passwords are quickly and securely imported.
- One handed QuickType keyboard (Not present on 4 inch devices.)
- News.app contains videos.
- Apple Maps have indoor maps and lane guidance.
- Apple Maps shows reduced drive time suggestions at every intersection.
- Do Not Disturb while driving.
- One column of widgets is displayed in the widgets view on iPad (vs two in iOS 10)
- "Platter" based Control Center design.
- On Non-3D Touch devices, notifications can now be interacted with via a long press, instead of having to swipe and tap "View".
- Customizable Control Center options such as Low Power Mode and Screen Recording.
- New calculator icon and app UI
- Ability to tap left or right AirPod to play Next or Previous track
- Signal Bars instead of Dots
- Emergency SOS is back by clicking the power button 5 times.
- Auto-Answer Calls (with a timer when to answer).
- Type to Siri
- Background refresh options (Off / Wi-Fi / Wi-Fi & Mobile Data)
- Redesigned Now Playing on lockscreen
- Only applications you can't delete are now: Messages, Phone, Wallet, Settings, App Store, Health, Safari, Find iPhone, Clock and Camera
- FaceTime Live Photos now exist from screenshots during a call
- GIF support in Photos app
- System-wide ‘smart quotes’/smart punctuation
- Autofill now works within apps
- Facebook and Twitter account integration has been removed
- iCloud file sharing now possible
- We can force Pesky apps like Uber and Weather to use location services “While Using” instead of default Always or Never.
- New aerial imagery (current to 2016/7) in the Maps app.
- "One-finger" tap-and-zoom navigation in the Maps app (similar to Google Maps or INRIX Maps).
- New "Accounts and Passwords" Settings panel in System Preferences.
- Ability to change Paper Style in Notes.
- Ability to add tables in Notes.
- Activate connection sharing from control center.
- Request access to a Wi-Fi network by holding iPhone near an unlocked iOS device or Mac that has the password
- To switch FaceTime cameras, tap your PiP while on a call.
- Added Hindi Dictation to iOS. Both English and Hindi words can be spoken and recognized. Three keyboards (Hindi, Hindi transliteration, Hinglish) are supported.
- QR codes work anywhere in the world
- When restoring from iCloud, iOS now shows how much data is left to restore.
- HomeKit automations can trigger based on multiple conditions such as location AND time.
- Customized pronunciations in Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech > Pronunciations (saving them seems broken in beta 1)
- Files app replaces iCloud Drive, allows you to save files on iCloud Drive, locally, or soon to third party cloud storage
- iCloud Photo Library syncs face recognition
- "Send with Echo" and "Send with Spotlight" screen effects in Messages.
- Screenshot workflow allows editing and sending before you choose whether you want to save them to Photos.
- Siri can translate phrases into other languages.
- New "smart" invert colors option, which inverts backgrounds and avoids inverting some content.
- Ability to toggle auto-join for Wi-Fi networks.
- The accessibility option "button shapes" have been redesigned.
- Phone dial keypad changed some (bolder fonts?) and moved the delete button back where it should be on the lower right vs the top where it was hard to reach.
- When screen lights up upon lifting the background is lit gradually instead of all at once.
- Weather gives a lot more information and is in a new layout.
- AirPod battery level pop-up appears on iPad.
- New Camera loading spinner in the shutter button
- App icons become transparent when moving
- Mail will detail any account errors in the status bar, and which account.
- Timer now allows user to set seconds in addition to hours & minutes.
- Alarm layout is bigger; now shows 6 1/2 alarms on screen vs 7 previously.
- Swipe to remove songs from Up Next in Music (is buggy, red “Remove” slider persists, but song is removed upon swiping. Swipe the bar back to the right side of the screen to clear it.)
- Podcast app has an overall redesigned layout similar to TV app. Show description is now all the way on bottom during playing; user must slide up to activate sleep timer and see description. Podcast artwork size increases when user presses play and decreases when paused. App remembers last show played for each show user is subscribed to (episode 3 of show A, episode 20 of show B).
- New App Store redesign. Games are given a bigger spotlight area that also shows off in app purchases and scrolls up. All other apps are sorted by category. Search is now all the way on the right on bottom whereas updates used to be in that spot. Apps with updates are now given a small description area that can be expanded by tapping “More”. App update screen is now more spaced out.
- Volume HUD has been redesigned within video apps
and completely removed from the rest of iOS(the latter has turned out to be a bug within Control Center) - Redesigned App Store in Watch app.
- In Safari, when tapping a link that opens in a new tab, sliding in from the left will close that tab and return to the parent tab.
- Turning on airplane does not disable Wifi and Bluetooth (maybe a bug?)
- Auto-brightness is broken
- Missing 'Clear all notifications' button [only when in Homescreen]
- When launching apps / reopening them, there is a delay, up to 1 second. (Workaround: clear all apps from multitasking)
- 3D Touch to access App Switcher is broken (or removed)
- Can't share via Messages
- Old App Store icon appears in Settings
- Without using 3D Touch, you can't dismiss notifications on the Lock Screen.
- Must manually quit the App Store (once) before you can individually update applications.
- Dock covers Night Shift toggle in Control Center when in landscape mode on iPad
- Safari content blockers are broken (or require workarounds - see "Content blockers - Please come back!" thread for details on how to reactivate a couple of ad blockers).
- Sometimes the Lock Screen shows the Home Screen wallpaper.
- Music widget stuck on lock screen
- Battery widget is displayed despite no other devices being connected.
- Unable to disable apps in iMessage app drawer
- Asking Siri to send messages to contacts with multiple methods brings up a selection list with formatting errors.
- Not able to toggle Bluetooth in the Control Centre (toggle works fine in Settings)
- Using 3D Touch with data detectors (phone numbers, addresses, etc.) does not work.
- Launching the App Store stops other audio.
- Apps over 100MB may download over Cellular connection after acknowledging the warning prompt.
- Song metadata is not being synced from the device to iTunes. This includes play counts, skip counts, and associated timestamps. Smart Playlists that use this criteria such as Recently Played, do not update. This does not affect Star Ratings or Love/Dislike.
- Elapsed time may not be updated when hitting play, pause, or seeking during video content playback.
- Sometimes Messages on iCloud might be unavailable after the device has been offline.
- If a user restores from a backup in which the Notes app is deleted, the app may not work properly after being re-installed.
- Under some circumstances, rotating an iOS device may cause Apple Pencil to become unusable.
- Phone app may crash when a Voicemail message is deleted.
- For certain carriers in certain geographies, some services such as Voicemail, Messaging, Call Wait, Call forwarding, etc., on Wi-Fi calling-enabled devices may not work as expected.
- An SOS notification may be sent out even if the user cancels it.
- Personal hotspot data usage is not reflected in the cellular data usage UI when the device acts as the host on T-Mobile US devices.
- Occasionally widgets displayed off-centered on lock screen
- Editing a photo with the new "Markup" option causes the image to have a red tint.
- Youtube App doesn't show search bar
- Youtube website lags playing video on Safari but works fine in the Youtube App.
- Messages app will crash if you try to delete a thread where the other user is being shared your location.
- Horizontal Control Center cuts off toggles if more than three are enabled (iPhone only)
- When playing music from any sources other than the Music app (i.e. Spotify, Pandora, etc), the album art in the control center and on the lock screen will be blank
- While using the Spotify app (possibly other apps as well), if you leave the Spotify app open in the foreground, and wait for the device's auto screen-lock to kick in, 9 out of 10 times, the screen will either stay on and never dim/lock, or the screen will dim but never lock.
- Moving applications can be glitchy and get stuck requiring you to restart
- Camera can be unreliable at times, refusing to start no matter what app or if you close that app. Restart seems to be the only remedy.
- Calculator and camera cannot be access through control center with a single tap. Camera can be accessed by force touching it and choose a mode, however.
- Phone will freeze/spin CPU with a Vodafone UK SIM. More on Apple Developer forums
- Phone app will freeze when tap keypad.
- Some navigation apps remain persistent/active despite swiping them "closed", including Waze (sometimes) and INRIX Traffic (every time). Rebooting and/or removing & reinstalling did not solve this; removing INRIX Traffic was the only fix for this app. The iPhone 6S+ running INRIX became very hot during navigation.
- In the Field Test App (VZW iP6S+ and ATTWS iP6S) now shows "bars" and not a numerical gain.
- Weather app shows incorrect high & low temperatures for current day.
- News widget displays seemingly random number of stories, incorrect time posted (underneath).
- Clicking story from News widget results in jump, brief "Dock" pop-up on iPad.
- Under certain circumstances, opening Safari results in blank page of a blurred, grey-overlayed wallpaper.
- Swiping on a Business Chat Sandbox thread and tapping “Delete” in Messages will cause a crash. (Workaround: press and hold on a message inside the thread, tap “More...” and tap “Delete All” in top left hand corner to delete the thread.)
- Device may randomly go hot and battery starts to drain rapidly. Restart or hard reset does not fix the issue. However, it may go away itself.
- Tapping music control in control center does nothing.
- Arranging icons on the homescreen is wonky, aside from the extreme lag when dragging an icon, sometimes it's impossible to get back into the 'wiggle' mode without doing a hard reset.
- Social accounts have been removed from Settings in iOS 11. Third-party apps no longer have access to those signed-in accounts.
- iOS 11 adds a new sync system for your Safari Bookmarks and Reading List to provide better syncing and security. Migration to the new sync system occurs silently after all the devices signed into your iCloud account are running iOS 11.
