I was wondering: what happens if I put iOS 11 Beta on my iPhone 7+, and don't upgrade my Mac to High Sierra, leaving it on Sierra instead?

I have iCloud Photo Library active. If I take photos or videos on my iPhone, they will be HEIF/HEVC encoded. How will they sync to the Mac? Will they be converted on the fly by the Apple cloud? Or will they be downloaded as HEIF/HEVC, with my Mac being unable to display them?

Also, assuming I still get JPEGs on my Mac, what happens if I edit them? Will they sync back as JPEGs to the iPhone, without being HEIF anymore?

Thanks :)

im on my MacBook now, using iCloud photo library and the pics I took earlier on my iPhone 7 are showing up in there as imagexxx.HEIC when I look at the "get info" section of the photo instead of imagexxx.jpg.

looks like in iOS 11 you can select the new format (efficiency) or the regular format (compatibility) in the camera settings section.

Do you have Sierra or High Sierra on your MacBook?

Little things won't carry over. Like scanning in notes or tables will say you need to upgrade to see this. And yeah when you xfer a new file format it will transcode to the old one for compatibility unless you have HS.

I'm dual booting. But in Sierra you can see the picture but that's it. Can see the full size image and there's a "!" Inside a triangle warning you that that image is an incompatible format. Also, all of the picture properties that usually says "iPhone 7, f stop, iso" etc is unable to be thread by photos app. However when I go into high Sierra, it's there.
