I have a quick question for someone running the iOS 11 beta that I can't seem to find the answer for.

In the notes app on an iPad Pro, when you tap to start a new note can you simply start drawing with your Apple Pencil or does it still automatically bring up the keyboard and force you to touch the squiggle button to launch into a drawing screen and then insert the drawing? I'd love to eliminate that extra step and always have new notes look for Apple Pencil input rather than bring up the keyboard for a typed note and force you to touch a button to start drawing.

I don't have the beta so it is pure speculation, however my understanding is that the new notes has a feature that allows you to draw in line with text and I believe you can do this just by tapping the screen with the pencil.

However I would assume that the keyboard will automatically launch when you create a new note because most people would be typing first, even if just a title for the note.

Just tested it. It brings up the software keyboard by default if you don’t have a hardware keyboard active but as soon as you touch the screen with Pencil it allows you to draw, dismisses the keyboard and shows the Pencil controls.

Awesome, thanks for taking the time to check it out!

What you’re looking to do has been solved. On the lock screen, tap on the lock screen twice with your Apple Pencil. The Notes app will open up and allow you to start drawing immediately.

I'm definitely excited for that, launching from the lock screen will be extremely helpful.

However, there are many times I'm at my desk with my iPad already in the notes app and I get a call that I need to take quick notes for.

The workflow now is: tap "new note" button, tap drawing squiggle, jot down note, tap done, and it's inserted into a note like a picture.

I'd prefer: tap "new note" button, simply begin drawing directly on the note. No hitting a drawing button and no hitting done to insert, I want to draw directly on the note. It sounds like the functionality I'm looking for is there in iOS 11.
