Is this legit? I've never had my iPad ask for my iPhone's passcode.

It does seem odd if that just popped up out of the blue. I used the new iOS 11 easy setup option to set up my new iPad Pro from my phone and the iPad asked for the phone passcode during that process, which makes sense, but I haven’t see it pop up again since the initial setup.

Even when I set up my iPad Pro 12.9" on iOS 10, I got the same message while setting up. I can't remember a time when I got it randomly post-setup.

Thank you for your help guys. Apple Support on Twitter was no help. The customer service bots on Twitter are frustratingly useless. It's hurting Apple's reputation for customer service.

This popped up when I set up iCloud after installing iOS 11 on my iPad as a brand new device and skipping the initial iCloud setup. Looks like it's normal but I have to say that it's not very intuitive. My iPhone passcode should only ever be input in my iPhone. Any other device that asks for it looks suspicious.

Pretty sure this has to do with iCloud Keychain. It's encrypted your keychain with your iPhone passcode. To use it, you need to decrypt it so it can be loaded onto the iPad.

The thing is that the Beta isn’t officially an Apple product yet that’s why there’s no support for it. Right now its accepted as is and Apple would only take feedback through proper channels.

Don't forget this is beta software: Apple support will not be briefed on details until everything has been set in stone.

All speculation: Since you skipped setup, your iPad probably doesn't have the key needed to unlock the encryption key to actually open your iCloud stuff. Is your iPhone on iOS 11 and on the same network? It's probably just wanting to grab the key directly from your phone instead of requiring you verify with iCloud's servers as a convenience.

There's not really information here and Apple hasn't updated their white paper, so your guess is as good as mine.

I believe this is part of the two factor authentication. I received the same thing when I updated my iPad to iOS 11

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

Basically, nowadays when two-factor auth gets switched on, instead of an arbitrary pass phrase picked by you... Apple just takes the passcode of the first device you converted and uses that as your "recovery key".

Unfortunately they don't actually explain this very clearly.

I've had this happen, but I'm not sure why. I think it's some requirement for decrypting data for iCloud Keychain or HomeKit.

When it happened to me my current passcode didn't work, I had to use a passcode that was last used several years prior.
