iPhone iOS 11 Removed Ability to Toggle Airplay from Control Center

So, this has been really annoying me since upgrading to iOS 11. Prior to the new software release (iOS 10), control center had the airplay icon, which allowed the user to connect/disconnect from airplay streaming.

Now with iOS 11, let’s say I’m in a 3rd party app like YouTube and I use the apps integration to stream to my Apple TV via airplay, then I leave the app and open another such as Instagram, the phone continues to stream to Apple TV since it’s still connected to Airplay.

This is absolutely annoying and there is no easy way to disconnect from airplay without opening up a 3rd party app with integrated airplay support to turn the streaming off.

The Apple TV control widget in control center is great but doesn’t have the option to turn airplay streaming off. Is it just me and I’m not aware that this functionality exists in iOS 11, or does anyone else find this to be an issue too?

You can enable/disable AirPlay from the now playing widget. The icon in the corner should be glowing blue.

What are you talking about? It’s still the same as iOS 10, it’s 2 steps, swipe up, tap the Signal icon in the Now Playing window. Then your airplay devices are there

Ok maybe not 5. But not 2. Before you just swiped up and then you had your options. Now you swipe up. Then press that little icon and then you get your options

It is things like this (Airplay) that has me concerned with iOS. Taking a Master Control and embedding it at a local level.
Simplistic and "it just works" have become a thing of the past.
New items, functions and methods are good but should not come at the expense of existing simplistic functions.
More and more over the years, iOS has become more about hidden functions, gestures, and control methods than about making it easily useful. Don't get me wrong, I like iOS. Just not like I used too.

The new method is certainly not intuitive. My wife has been using Airplay near daily for many years, and could not figure out how to make Spotify connect after the iOS 11 update. It doesn't help that it uses the same Airplay icon for screen mirroring in the location where she previously found the Airplay for audio option.

With iOS 10, you still had to press the AirPlay output button to view your list of devices. It’s not like you always have it opened like that
